Being called a rookie cop, Xia Yu’s eyes widened like a cat with its fur standing on end, and she glared at Yang Yan, as if she wouldn’t let it go unless he gave a satisfactory explanation today!

"Because your uniform is still quite new, and when you wear it, it looks very neat. I don’t know if you’ve ironed it, but I’ve never seen the police at the station look as clean and tidy as you. You look just like the police in the public service advertisements of the Ministry of Public Security, all energetic and sharp!" Yang Yan honestly shared his analysis.

Yang Yan actually didn’t say the rest, which was that the female police officers on TV weren’t as good-looking as Xia Yu!

Although Yang Yan was praising her, Xia Yu didn’t feel happy after hearing it. Instead, she stared at him suspiciously, trying to read his expression. She asked tentatively, "Have you seen many police officers?"

Yang Yan quickly explained, "It’s like this, I’m currently interning at a startup run by a senior sister. Her company develops and provides database software, mainly focusing on big data visualization analysis..."

At this point, Yang Yan paused, feeling that he was getting too technical, so he skipped over the technical details and said, "Last year, we worked on a database project for the Yangcheng Public Security Bureau. I went to the bureau and some of the police stations a few times, so I have some understanding."

Xia Yu retracted her scrutinizing gaze but still felt a bit不服气 (unconvinced). She bit her lip and argued, "That’s not necessarily true. Maybe I just changed into a new uniform, and the old one was worn out!"

"Xia Yu, I also went to the Shaping Street Police Station last year, and I didn’t see you there at all!" Yang Yan said with a smile.

Yang Yan was very confident in his memory, and Xia Yu had a pair of unforgettable eyes. If she had been at the Shaping Street Police Station last year, how could he not remember?

Xia Yu was momentarily speechless. She glared at Yang Yan, a bit angry and embarrassed, "Don’t call me Xia Yu! You haven’t completely cleared your suspicion, so don’t try to get close!"

Was this considered turning her back on him without mercy?

Yang Yan, who didn’t realize he had upset the beautiful police officer, was a bit at a loss with her sudden change in attitude. He sat there, wide-eyed and speechless.

...

Fortunately, the baby girl was taken to the hospital in time. After the doctors treated her, her condition gradually improved by noon. Her temperature came down, and she was given some breast milk from a kind nurse who was in the lactation period.

After all, breast milk contains antibodies that newborns need, making it more suitable for a sick and weak infant than regular milk.

"… But the doctor said she still needs to be hospitalized for further examination, so she will stay at the hospital for a few days. This is probably the best choice," Xia Yu said, standing in front of the payment window in the hall. She was holding a can of formula and a bag of lunch, but she was dressed like a patient.

In the morning, Yang Yan had already taken a shower at the hospital’s inpatient department and changed into a blue and white striped patient gown. Although it looked strange, it was much better than his previous dirty and smelly appearance!

After his shower, he was finally able to visit the baby girl in the ward. Seeing the little one lying on the small hospital bed, Yang Yan thought about the doctor’s diagnosis of malnutrition. So, while buying lunch, he also bought a can of formula for her at the hospital store.

Speaking of which, when buying the formula, Yang Yan learned for the first time that there were different stages of formula, from stage one to stage four. The attention to detail for children’s products was truly impressive, and Yang Yan stood in front of the baby products shelf, marveling at it.

However, compared to the money Yang Yan spent on the formula, Xia Yu contributed much more. She didn’t care at all and casually took out a bank card to pay for the baby girl’s medical expenses and hospital fees!

"That’s all we can do. I hope we can find her parents," Yang Yan sighed softly.

Xia Yu had planned to return to the police station for lunch, but since Yang Yan had already bought her lunch, she didn’t hesitate to join him. The two of them went to the hospital cafeteria and started eating their boxed lunches ravenously.

Yang Yan was really hungry. He hadn’t eaten breakfast, and his stomach was growling. It was understandable that he ate quickly, but Xia Yu, a beautiful girl, also ate in a rather ungraceful manner, which surprised Yang Yan. He couldn’t help but look at her a few times.

"What are you looking at?" Xia Yu noticed and asked without lifting her head, her mouth full.

"Nothing, nothing," Yang Yan quickly shook his head, worried about upsetting the police officer again.

"Just say it! You’re a man, don’t be so timid!" Xia Yu said with a bit of an old-fashioned air.

Yang Yan had to rack his brain to find a topic. He stammered, "I was thinking about the little girl. If, I mean, just in case, if you can’t find her parents, what will happen?"

In reality, both Yang Yan and Xia Yu knew that finding the parents of an abandoned infant was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Even with surveillance footage, it would be very difficult. Facial recognition and precise location technology might only exist in movies—otherwise, so many criminals wouldn’t be able to get away with it, right?

Faced with this very real problem, Xia Yu fell silent. After a long while, she shook her head and said, "I don’t know."

This topic seemed to be at a dead end, and both Yang Yan and Xia Yu quietly ate their boxed lunches.

After a while, Xia Yu couldn’t help but speak up. She picked up the small plastic bowl and took a sip of the soup before saying, "If there’s no other way, she might have to go to a children’s welfare home..."

Before Yang Yan could respond, Xia Yu raised her voice and said seriously, "But I will find her parents, I will!"

Yang Yan quickly nodded and smiled, "Yes, you will. I believe that no matter how difficult life gets, there’s always a way through!"

...

In the afternoon, after confirming that the baby girl’s fever had subsided and leaving his phone number with the doctor, Yang Yan, still in his patient gown, carried his dirty clothes and went to the Shaping Street Police Station with Xia Yu to give a statement.

This was just a formality, but Xia Yu, the rookie cop, was very serious and meticulously questioned Yang Yan, following the procedure step by step.

Yang Yan was very cooperative, but he felt a bit embarrassed. After all, his patient gown made him stand out in the police station, and wherever he went, he became the center of attention!

Sure enough, when he and Xia Yu came out of the office and returned to the front hall, the people there, who were there to handle household registration or report incidents, turned to look at them in surprise.

"Yanzi?" A voice full of surprise and joy echoed in the police station’s hall.

Yang Yan turned to see Jiang Yuan looking at him with surprise. Lei Zhen Tian and Fang He Xu, who were talking to a police officer, also stood up. Lei Zhen Tian pointed at Yang Yan, too excited to speak!

Fang He Xu wiped the sweat from his forehead and said with a smile, "Damn, Yanzi, we finally found you! You have no idea, we thought something had happened to you and were about to report it!"

"Then the police said we might have made a mistake, that you might have gone somewhere without telling us, and suggested we try to find you again," Jiang Yuan joined the group, coming over to Yang Yan and said with a complaint.

"Never mind, never mind, it’s good that we found Yanzi!" Lei Zhen Tian laughed and patted Yang Yan’s shoulder, "Where were you last night? Why are you dressed like this?"

"Right! Did you get hurt somewhere?" Jiang Yuan asked anxiously.

These brothers might not be very reliable, but Yang Yan still felt their concern for him. He smiled and shook his head, "No, I’m not hurt. But if I talk about what happened last night, it’s a long story!"
