As the night fell over the city of Guangzhou, Yang Yan stopped at the entrance of the dormitory building of Nanyue University, his expression somewhat hesitant.
"Yan, let's go up!" Lei Zhen Tian, who was picking his teeth, followed from behind and patted Yang Yan's shoulder with his free left hand, smiling, "I just told Biao and the others, we'll start when everyone is here."
Fang He Xun, standing nearby, glanced at his watch and shook his head, saying, "Old Lei, I can't make it tonight, I need to go to the library to work on my resume later."
"I can't either, I have to review the course materials tonight, we need to write the proposal for our graduation thesis!" Jiang Yuan quickly added.
Lei Zhen Tian snorted with satisfaction and said, "I knew you two would flake out. I already figured it out. Biao's dorm has three people, plus me and Yan, it's perfect!"
Fang He Xun didn't mind and laughed, "Old Lei, can I be blamed for flaking out? My family isn't as well-off as yours, with a mine!"
In their 506 dorm, Lei Zhen Tian was the wealthiest. He didn't need to worry about finding a job after graduation. Of course, Yang Yan and Jiang Yuan didn't need to worry either, but it wasn't because of their family's financial situation. They had both passed the postgraduate entrance exams early due to their excellent grades and would continue their studies at Nanyue University after their senior year.
So, only Fang He Xun needed to focus on finding a job.
Of course, Fang He Xun's family wasn't poor. He was from Guangdong Province, and his family had some original savings, which was better than Jiang Yuan, whose parents were ordinary employees in a small county in western Shaanxi.
However, this guy had some ambition. During late-night chats in the dorm, he had mentioned wanting to be a big boss, so he didn't consider pursuing a master's degree. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he wanted to work for a large company, and he was applying for management trainee positions. Fang He Xun planned to gain enough social experience and connections in a large company before starting his own business.
Getting a bit off-topic, Yang Yan, who was usually the main player in Lei Zhen Tian's gaming sessions, seemed uninterested in Lei Zhen Tian's proposal today. After hesitating for a moment, he called out to Lei Zhen Tian, "Old Lei, I won't go up for now. You and Biao can play. I need to go to the hospital."
"Why are you going to the hospital?" Jiang Yuan asked, puzzled.
Lei Zhen Tian, who reacted quickly, frowned slightly and said, "Yan, are you going to see that child?"
Yang Yan smiled and said, "Yes, I'm still a bit worried. She had a fever of 39 degrees this morning, and although she got better later, I don't know how she is now."
Fang He Xun, confused, said, "Why are you going to see her? Didn't that Officer Xia say she would help find the child's parents? And you don't have any connection with the child, is it necessary to go through all this trouble?"
"Oh, the child Yan mentioned this afternoon!" Jiang Yuan, who was a bit slow to catch on, exclaimed, "She is quite pitiful, being abandoned by her parents at such a young age."
Yang Yan didn't elaborate much, he just smiled and said, "I'll go and see her, otherwise, I won't be at ease."
After Yang Yan explained his plans, Lei Zhen Tian remained silent, not because he was angry that Yang Yan was neglecting their gaming session. Given their relationship, if he was upset, he would have said it directly.
But even as Yang Yan turned to leave, Lei Zhen Tian remained silent, watching Yang Yan's back thoughtfully, rubbing his chin.
...
The Third Affiliated Hospital of Nanyue University was a few subway stops away from the university. By the time Yang Yan arrived at the hospital, it was almost 8 PM.
"Is she not running a fever anymore? Has her temperature been checked tonight?" Yang Yan asked the on-duty nurse, a bit worried.
"The child's condition is better than we expected. She was very weak when you brought her in this morning, but she recovered quickly. Dr. Peng even said it was miraculous. She was no longer running a fever by noon. Don't worry, we've been monitoring her closely," the nurse said, flipping through the medical records hanging at the head of the infant's bed, and smiled at Yang Yan.
"That's good!" Yang Yan smiled, lowering his head to look at the small baby sleeping in the crib.
She was wrapped tightly in a small blanket, only her little face exposed. However, she looked much better than in the morning. Her pale little mouth had regained its rosy color, and her thin little cheeks seemed to have a bit of plumpness!
"But she is so small..." Yang Yan couldn't help but think.
Looking at her tiny nose and mouth, so delicate and cute, even though it was hard to tell if she was a girl, her frail appearance and the delicate, almost translucent skin on her face gave a strong sense of wanting to protect her!
"How could anyone abandon you?" Yang Yan felt indignant on her behalf!
Yes, there was no reason!
Although it was hard to tell if such a young child was beautiful, at least her features were well-proportioned, and she wasn't an ugly child! According to the doctor's examination, her limbs were健全, her vision and hearing were fine, and she could cry loudly, so she probably didn't have any genetic diseases. Why would anyone want to abandon such a "complete" child?
"Is it because she's a girl?" Yang Yan thought angrily.
Just as Yang Yan was racking his brain for an answer, the little girl suddenly kicked her feet and started to cry, "Ya, hmm."
"Ah?" Yang Yan was taken aback, not sure what he had done.
"Is the child awake?" The nurse, who was doing a routine check on another child, heard the cry and walked over.
Standing beside Yang Yan, he felt a bit awkward and explained in a low voice, "Sister Wang, I didn't touch the child!"
Nurse Wang smiled at Yang Yan and then, without responding immediately, gently lifted the blanket and checked the diaper on the baby's bottom.
Interestingly, the baby's crying became much quieter. She just opened her big, round eyes, looking at Nurse Wang's arm and making small sounds.
"Don't worry, the child is just hungry," Nurse Wang said, seeing that it wasn't a bowel or bladder issue. She covered the baby with the blanket, gently patted her little tummy, and then explained to Yang Yan, "Didn't you buy formula for the child? I'll mix some for her to drink."
"Hungry? She didn't eat tonight?" Yang Yan, curious, followed Nurse Wang as she went to mix the formula, asking in confusion.
Nurse Wang smiled and explained gently, "You really... Newborns eat small amounts but frequently. Do you not know this basic fact? Adults eat three meals a day and are full, but not so for children!"
"How many meals does she need a day?" Yang Yan asked in surprise.
"How many meals? It's hard to say. Generally, every three hours, but basically, if she's hungry, she needs to be fed!" Nurse Wang continued her work, answering slowly.
"That's so much trouble!" Yang Yan was genuinely surprised, as he had never known this before.
"Do you think so? Being a mother is very hard work!" Nurse Wang said casually.
Yang Yan fell silent.
Nurse Wang, holding the bottle, walked to the baby's bed, testing the temperature on her wrist. She suddenly stopped and said, "I forgot, this isn't your child. You're just the kind person who brought her here with the police this morning! Oh, I wonder who could have abandoned such a cute child..."
"Sister Wang, Sister Wang!" Yang Yan hurriedly waved his hands and lowered his voice, "Don't mention this in front of the child."
Nurse Wang looked at him as if he were a fool and laughed, "What's the problem? A child who hasn't even reached one month old, are you worried she'll overhear?"
Yang Yan, feeling a bit flustered, scratched his head and smiled, "I guess you're right..."
But when Yang Yan turned to look at the baby in the crib, for some reason, he seemed to see a hint of indescribable sadness in her big, round, black-pearl-like eyes!
"Huh?" Yang Yan blinked in confusion, but when he looked again, the baby was just lying quietly in the crib, probably hungry and craving, sucking on her thumb that was close to her face.
As for her eyes, at such a young age, her vision wasn't fully developed, and Yang Yan couldn't find that sadness anymore, only a sense of confusion about her surroundings.
"I must have been mistaken. How could such a young child express her emotions?" Yang Yan shook his head lightly, embarrassed to mention his earlier observation, fearing that Nurse Wang would mock his ignorance.
Nurse Wang picked up the baby, holding her in one arm with the blanket and feeding her milk with the other hand.
Despite her inability to move, whether it was her soft little hands or her limp neck, the baby drank the milk with great effort. The way she drank the milk, simple and pure, made Yang Yan feel like it was the most beautiful scene in the world!
"Do you want to try?" Nurse Wang, seeing Yang Yan's intense focus, and thinking about his "connection" to the baby, asked.
"Ah?" Yang Yan's face turned nervous, "Me? I don't know how, it wouldn't be good, right?"
"Just try? Who is born knowing how to feed a baby?" Nurse Wang laughed.
