Beltaine, the daughter of the Prime Minister and a Marquis' daughter of the prosperous small country of Sanruan, was happily awaiting her marriage in two weeks. One day, as part of the war reparations for a war in which her country was not directly involved, she is sent to marry into the victorious country. After a journey filled with despair and resignation, Beltaine arrives in the victorious country and receives treatment unlike anything she has ever experienced. She despairs, questioning her purpose in life, but then resolves to become strong enough that no one can hurt her again. The Marquis' daughter, who had lived a gentle and elegant life, is reborn strong in the enemy country, gaining power and involving those around her.
