In college, there is news that can both cheer you up and depress you at the same time. That is the power outage. The reason for the excitement is that many classes will be cancelled but without electricity, they could do nothing. You can’t play games, can’t stay up all night, can’t charge your phone and all kinds of illegal electrical appliances in the bedroom can’t be used.
T/N: Illegal here refers to appliances that are not allowed in dorm rooms. For eg, some dorms prohibit microwaves but students will still sneak them into their rooms, hence the term ‘illegal’ is used.
And this time, Fang Yu’s school had to experience the torture of this tribulation. Not only did the campus completely lose power, the residential buildings, restaurants and other places around the school were also affected and it lasted for three full days.
The school was happy because two of the three days happened to coincide with the weekend. The school directly notified the students, informing them that the classes for that day would be rescheduled. Fang Yu thought there was no point staying in a place with no electricity so he decided to stay at his main house and brought Lin Moyan with him.
Lin Moyan frowned when he heard Fang Yu’s proposal and wanted to refuse at first. However, Fang Yu reasoned with him, saying that there would be no hot showers nor television. After listening to Fang Yu, Lin Moyan thought that he would be bored staying so he finally agreed to leave with Fang Yu.
After their last class on Thursday, the two went back to their residence to pack a change of clothes and then went to the main house. The main house was located on the east side of the city and the environment was quiet. Unlike the houses in the city, no bright car lights were dotting the roads at night nor annoying noises that would disrupt people in the middle of the night.
Fang Yu took Lin Moyan into his bedroom and asked him to take a rest. Lin Moyan sat on the bed and waited a few minutes but Fang Yu didn’t come back. He stood up and looked around the room curiously. The layout of the bedroom was basic. The large bed occupied almost half of the space and the other half was occupied by a desk, some bookshelves and other furnishings. It was simple and plain, matching Fang Yu’s personality.
Lin Moyan went to Fang Yu’s desk. There was nothing on it and looked like it hadn’t been used in a long time. He looked around and found that there was something like a picture frame on the corner of the table, with its back facing upwards. He was curious about the frame so he picked up the photo frame and turned it over.
The picture was of a family of three. In the middle was a young teenager. The eyebrows were somewhat similar to the two standing behind him. It must be his parents. The young boy’s immature face gave Lin Moyan an undeniable sense of familiarity. The figure of the boy was very similar to someone who was inseparable from him. After a little pondering, he determined that the boy in this photo should be Fang Yu.
In the photo, only the boy in the front was smiling widely while the mouths of the two adults were slightly lifted into a reserved smile. The atmosphere surrounding them was harmonious. However, the smiles of the adults were slightly rigid, resembling a smile that had been measured and put on many times.
T/N: A stiff smile
Lin Moyan frowned. He always felt that this photo felt odd but he couldn’t tell what was out of place. He flipped the photo back and forth but never found anything out of the ordinary. He stood there, staring at the photo intently, trying to find out what was wrong.
“Does it feel so fake?”
Lin Moyan was suddenly interrupted. He raised his head and looked at Fang Yu who had a sarcastic look on his face. Seeing Fang Yu’s odd expression, Lin Moyan was a little uncomfortable. He suddenly realized that he hadn’t seen Fang Yu showing such a disdainful expression in a long time.
Recently, this person was like a wolf with sharp teeth hiding in sheep’s clothing, making Lin Moyan mistake him for a good person. Fang Yu took the photo frame from Lin Moyan’s hand, took the photo out of it, and handed it to Lin Moyan. Lin Moyan took the photo with some doubts, only to realise what was so unsettling about the picture.
The photo had been folded in half, then placed inside the frame. The other half had been hidden and concealed by the frame.
“The photo frame was customized by me, just to make this half of the photo more… close to my imagination,” Fang Yu spoke.
Lin Moyan didn’t know if it was his illusion but he felt that Fang Yu was particularly indifferent. Fang Yu continued as if Lin Moyan was transparent and he was just talking to himself.
“It is rare for the three of us to take pictures together. It seems that grandpa and grandma requested it and found a photographer. Both of them were very reluctant. You can’t see it clearly when you look at their upper bodies but if you look at their lower body, they are far apart. From a third perspective, we barely resembled a family at all. Between people, even if their upper body is close together, the distance between their feet is the sign that shows whether they are close. If they are unwilling to stand together, no matter how close they lean towards one another, they won’t be able to hide the fact that they are not comfortable with one another.”
“At that time, I was young and thought that by keeping our upper bodies intimate, I could deceive myself into thinking that we were a good family who loved each other. Now that I’m older, I know that it is impossible to pretend that it’s like this. I can’t cover up the awkwardness between us. This photo has been on the table for a long time and hasn’t seen the light for a long time.”
When Fang Yu said this, his head was hung down, making it difficult for people to see his expression. Lin Moyan spread out the entire photo and as exactly as what Fang Yu had said, in the bottom half of the photo, the distance between the adults was larger than the upper part. Lin Moyan folded the photo again and put it back in the frame. If Fang Yu really didn’t care, he wouldn’t have kept this photo on his desk.
It had been placed in such a conspicuous place but had been hidden. It’s just hard to face the fact that their family was not perfect. Fang Yu merely wanted to experience a family’s warmth and give himself some kind of comfort. Lin Moyan had never seen this desolate part of Fang Yu. Fang Yu had always been violent in front of him but had been more gentle nowadays.
However, seeing today’s Fang Yu, Lin Moyan wanted to hug and comfort him. The idea of hugging him only a fleeting one. Instead, he moved closer to Fang Yu, shortening the distance between the two of them.
