Standing in front of a wooden door that matched the style of the other rooms, Levi controlled his breathing and every movement, maintaining everything at the bare minimum required for human survival. Using his perfect assassin skills in this way would surely earn him condemnation from his peers for disgracing the profession.
— Alright!
He took a light breath and held it. Levi’s body was now at its optimal state. At this moment, he decisively broke through the space beside him and, in the next instant, successfully entered Eve’s bedroom. If this were a scoring competition, his movements would undoubtedly earn a perfect score.
The windows were covered with thick curtains, making the room even dimmer than the corridor. However, this posed no difficulty for Levi. His visual system, though fundamentally different from that of cats and similar animals, was more than capable of functioning effectively due to years of training.
On the left side of the room, against the wall, was a row of cabinets containing the only male’s clothes and miscellaneous items in the house. The room’s layout remained unchanged, showing no signs of alteration due to the presence of a young girl. Levi’s gaze quickly locked onto the desk in front of the window.
Before the room was requisitioned, Levi used to work at this desk. Despite his seemingly irresponsible appearance, he would definitely tell you that it was a recent illusion caused by the Holy Grail War. In fact, he used to write lesson plans on the computer on the desk every day.
In the second drawer on the right side of the desk, the cigarettes Levi had bought recently should still be lying quietly, waiting for his enjoyment.
Speaking of lying, Levi couldn’t help but feel curious and turned his head to look at the right side of the room, where the bed was. As he turned, he experienced a brief internal struggle. This was because the bed, an essential part of any bedroom, was there.
It was a simple, pure white single bed made of wood, skillfully crafted but not luxurious, exuding a sense of simplicity and comfort. It was the bed Levi used when he worked too late or when Iris was throwing a tantrum. Now, it belonged to his servant.
Thinking of this, it wasn’t hard to understand why he had a slight struggle. Sneaking into a bedroom at night was already a crime, and adding the act of peeping on a young girl would surely earn him a prison sentence from any judge.
But after his struggle, which lasted only 0.0001 seconds, he found no need to worry. The bed was neatly made, with not a single wrinkle in the sheets, clearly indicating that the bed had not been used today.
Where could Eve be? Just as this question popped into his mind, a glint of gold flashed in the corner of his eye. Given the strange situation, he maintained his professional composure and moved forward silently.
As he moved, there was no sound of his feet rubbing against the ground, and no other muscles in his body moved in the slightest. An ordinary person would not even notice that he had changed his position.
Feeling that he was at the right distance, Levi turned his head sharply! Then, he finally found the occupant of the room.
There, dressed in the same black tight-fitting clothes and short skirt that she wore during the day for easy combat, Eve stood leaning against the wall. Her golden hair, which should have been behind her, floated in the air like the antennae of an insect.
Levi’s heart seemed to contract tightly in that instant. He had no time to analyze the feeling; he only wanted to know what had turned a young girl, not much younger than his students, into this state.
His position on the right side of the door was to prevent anyone entering from immediately noticing him. With his arms crossed in front of his chest, he could reduce the time wasted in raising his hands to defend against an attack. His hair, which could connect to his entire nervous system after being modified, was constantly probing the environment.
Every detail of Eve’s body, in Levi’s eyes, had a purpose and necessity. The vigilant posture, like that of a seasoned soldier on guard against enemy ambushes, was something no one would expect from a girl of just a dozen years. Perhaps, in her mind, sleep was merely a physiological necessity to restore her physical and mental strength.
Levi always thought that through personal contact and information gathered from informants, he had a thorough understanding of this renowned space assassin. But he was certain that he had never seen her as clearly as he did now, not through cold, impersonal text, but through his own eyes.
The profession of an assassin was a lonely one, and Levi always thought that others understood this as well. He had never seriously considered that understanding did not mean acceptance, and even if one reluctantly accepted it, it did not mean they could bear it.
At this moment, the resentment in Levi’s heart, caused by being mistaken for someone else, dissipated. All that remained was deep sympathy for the young girl named Eve.
— It’s my fault.
Even now, he could not pretend to be the person Eve thought he was, but if he treated her a little better, he could bring her more happiness and joy. Levi remembered a mission where, when he pointed his gun at the last member of the enemy, the young man blurted out a word.
Cold.
Levi felt he deserved this description. The young men were just misguided and ignorant, and even if they had committed grave sins, they should have been given a chance to repent. But Levi did not, not even the opportunity to plead their case. Later, when he learned the truth, he secretly vowed never to take another life.
But humans are selfish beings, and since coming to this world, he had taken many lives. Even if he could justify it by saying he was protecting the most important people, Levi still remembered the young man’s eyes, filled with despair.
From being cold to being hypocritical, at least Levi felt this could reduce the harm he caused to others. He suppressed all his body’s movements, carefully avoiding the floating hair, and used the Command Spell on the back of his hand to lower Eve’s guard.
He gently lifted the girl around the waist and then placed her, even more gently, on the pristine, wrinkle-free bed.
As if sensing Levi’s intentions in her sleep, Eve’s hair, which had been floating in the air, mimicked her posture and draped over the soft bed like golden silk.
Levi carefully covered the girl with the blanket, ensuring she was comfortable. Just as he was about to leave, he noticed that his clothing had been tightly clutched by a small, pale hand.
Sigh.
A silent sigh, his gaze fixed on the innocent face. Levi, for the night, was destined to be without his cigarettes.
He sat by the bed, using the girl’s peaceful sleeping posture as the most beautiful painting. He silently admired and felt, until the first rays of morning sunlight fell on the blue floral curtains; until the delicate hand, as if finally feeling tired, released his clothing.
Facing the curtains now tinged with a light red, Levi made another vow in his heart. He had no right to make promises, but he would try, try to uphold this vow until the day it was forgotten.
Standing up, he cast one last glance at the girl’s smiling lips, and Levi disappeared from the warm little room as if he had never been there.
