The doors to the bar suddenly burst open as an unit of armed security guards flooded into the room, forming two rows on each sides. They aimed their guns towards the two groups of people in the bar, forcing them to stand apart as a yellow-skinned man with an expertly trimmed beard walked inside, wearing white gloves and a full uniform.
Surveying the surroundings, he spoke with a low voice, “What is going on here.”
“Mr. Smith, it’s obvious that Lucen the fatty was the one staring things.” Lucy battered her eyelids as she spoke. She then quickly whispered into Allen’s ears, “This is Smith, the head of security. He’s a total cleanliness freak that hates fat and dumb people like Lucen.”
With an, “Oh.” Allen decided to silently observe the situation.
Smith walked towards the two, his eyes on the girl, “Lady Lucy, the two of us has been meeting a bit too much recently, don’t you think?”
He then turned towards Allen and nodded, “Mr. Allen, you can leave first, I’ll take care of this.”
Allen was a bit surprised that they believed Lucy without any issue. Pulling at his sleeves, Lucy quickly led him out of the bar. And as they listened to Lucen’s screaming as they left, Lucy’s green eyes squinted in happiness.
“They trust you quite a bit.” Allen spoke.
Lucy laughed as she slapped Allen’s back, “Don’t be naive, they have surveillance in every corner of this place. Do you think they’d fall for Lucen’s tricks?”
“If that’s so, why……” Allen furrowed his brows.
If Smith knew, why did he even allow this to happen?
“You’re really too naive. While Smith and the others can see what’s happening in the tower, they can’t care less about the conflicts between the competitors, that is if there isn’t death involved. On the contrary, our performances are recorded in their database as a sort of information on us.”
Hearing this, Allen remembered the people recording something with their A.I. after his reflex training.
“Hey, ignore that pig.” Lucy nudged him, “You owe me one, how about considering becoming my underling?”
And as Allen was still a child, he still had some stubbornness in him, “Even if you didn’t come out, I’ll still be able to beat those guys. As for becoming your underling……”
Seeing the small smile on his face, Lucy’s face fell, “Don’t give me the same answer.”
“As I’ve said, I don’t want to become anyone’s underling. But we can be friends……my name is Allen.”
Watching as Allen reached out his hand, Lucy sighed, “Alright, friends it is.”
“Lucy!” The girl introduced herself as she held Allen’s hand. And when her eyes drifted towards his injured arm, she took off the ribbon in her pony tail, causing their golden hair to spill onto her shoulders.
As if it were golden waves, the light from the girl became piercingly bright, stunning Allen for a moment.
Only after she had tied the ribbon onto his arm did he finally snap back. She had tied a cute ribbon on his arm and waved, “I’m leaving, remember to wash it when you return it, friend.”
“Where can I find you?”
“Here, or on the seventeenth floor.” Leaving Allen a bright smile, the girl left.
That ray of light from the girl seemed to have entered his soul, slightly warming the cold depths of his heart.
In the bar, Lucen and the other children were taken away and Kud, who had the most severe injuries, was sent for immediate treatment first. Smith stood in the corner of the bar alone, and in front of him was a few bright drops of blood. Squatting down, a tube slid out from his sleeves. Taking a handkerchief to wipe the blood down, he stuffed the entire cloth into the tube.
And with a flick of his wrist, the tube slid back into his sleeves. Pretending nothing had happened, the head of security left quietly.
Returning to his office, Smith called for his confidant. Placing the tube onto the table gently, he spoke, “Hand this over to the Beskard family’s butler Mr Haising. Tell him that it’s something he needs.”
With a nod of his head, the confidant placed the tube into his pocket and left quietly. And in that night, the man walked into a hotel and opened a room, after placing the tube into a hidden safe in the room, he left. In ten minutes, the door to the room was opened again by another man wearing a long back coat and a trilby. Quickly entering the safe’s passcode, he retrieved the tube and placed it into a briefcase.
Carrying the briefcase to the hall, he handed it towards the manager and spoke with a low voice, “Immediately begin the DNA test with master Horn’s DNA.”
“Understood, sir.” The manager nodded.
It was deep into the night, the moon in the sky seemed significantly bigger from Babylon. On the floating island, one could even see the crevices on the moon. And as the moon’s light reflected on Babylon, it was saturated by the countless lights on the island. The brightly lit Babylon was filled with laughter.
The floating island was always that lively, and it seemed to be a completely different world from the dilapidated and lonely land.
As a man dressed in black walked out from the hotel and into the quiet street, he was stopped by two drunk men. The man moved to the side cautiously as the drunk men spoke, raising their bottles, “Want one, mister?”
“No, thanks.” The man turned to leave as the two drunk men started to argue behind him. He quickly slid into the crowd on the bustling streets. Not too far away, the song “Song of the Great Age” played on blast in an unknown hotel as the people started singing together. None of them were aware of the low melody added into the song in this ordinary night.
And as Smith received a large deposit into his account, Allen was reading one of the books Hughton had given him in his room. The book was called “Biography of Famous Generals”, it’s pages were already yellowed and creased.
Turning the cover, Allen could see the single line on the first page: The ends will always outweigh the means, and victory will always be more glorious than loss. As long as you win, no one cares about the unsightly methods you’ve used. The most important thing is surviving to the end!
The book recorded the experiences of every general and battles since the creation of the government. The human’s current lives were built upon these accumulated wars, most of which were on earth, while the rest were in the universe. The generals leading these wars had all sorts of traits, such as resourcefulness, intelligence and courageousness.
But no matter which trait they had, they all believed in one thing: All’s fair in war.
For example, one of the generals once said, “A smart general will use any means in their disposal, even attacking their enemies’s flank and rear. There are only two types of people that cried about fairness. Those that have already reached a position of absolute influence and were planning to build their military strength, and those who were ignorant fools. The former is cunning, while the latter is unbelievably stupid, the kind to end up as grime on the tires on cars.
Even Allen had to admit that some of the conspiracies described in the book made his back run cold. And at the end of the book, there was even a note written by Hughton that was even more shameless. It was written at the end as a concluding remark to the famous general Osarit’s words.
Perhaps some of our actions will sow scorn in our legacies. But for those who criticise us, remember that without us, you wouldn’t even have the chance to insult us. There is never any righteousness in war!
Staring at this sentence, Allen’s small soul was shaken yet again. And as he closed the book, Tonisev arrived. Walking to the hall, he saw the lieutenant ordering a few soldiers to move a few boxes in. Walking over, Allen looked at these boxes, “What are these?”
“Good stuff.” Happily opening the seal of a box, Tonisev revealed two rows of fruits inside of it. They seemed to be extremely fresh, the fruits were a bright red colour and even had drops of water on the leaves.
Allen’s eyes light up as he spoke hesitantly, “Are these……apples?”
Nature was healing on the land, but it was far from capable of producing fruits and vegetables. Allen had eaten an apple once in his life, it was a smuggled good Lannie had bought from the black market. He remembered the dried up fruit that had a sour taste to it, a taste he reminisced about even after a few years.
Seeing so many at once, Allen didn’t know how to react. But at a closer glance, he could tell that these fruits were slightly different from apples, their skin were much thinner, almost revealing the juicy flesh inside.
“These aren’t apples.” Taking one out, Tonisev stuffed it in Allen’s hands, “Try it, they’re definitely good.”
Allen took a bite, eating the fruit’s skin and flesh in one go. As it entered his mouth, it dissolved into a sweet fruit pulp almost instantly, sliding into Allen’s body. And suddenly, Allen felt the origin in his body tremble as it reacted towards this strange fruit.
“Hmph, fire berries. Tonisev, when did you become so generous.” Hughton, who was sprawled out drunk on a table nearby suddenly spoke.
Tonisev’s brightly decorated face lit up as he smiled, “These are the rewards for our precious Allen!”
