“Reward?” Allen asked as he took another bite out of the fire berry, and as the dissolved pulp entered his body, he could feel as though the Origin in his body was awakened as it coursed through his body. Origin was like fire, and the fruit was its perfect fuel. After eating the entire fruit, Allen could feel his origin burning like fire as his body increased in temperature, his pores emitted heat and his face turned red.
“Kid, go sit down now and calm your Origin waves down.” Hughton mumbled.
He then turned to scold Tonisev, “You idiot, you know that fire berries shocks Origin into waves, and without proper preparations it becomes harmful instead, and you still let him eat it.”
Tonisev shrugged, “Weren’t you here too? With our great General watching, I’d doubt my baby will get hurt.” And as he finished speaking, he battered his eyelids at Allen.
With a shudder, Allen decided to run towards the training area. Following Hughton’s instructions, he tried to calm himself as he collected the agitated Origin in his body. As he focused on his body, Allen could “see” the once calm Origin surge in his veins, moving like waves in the sea. He immediately tried to control his Origin, calming and collecting it.
Slowly, his Origin started to calm down and gather into an Origin Vortex, while it didn’t increase in number, Allen could “see” it’s colour becoming darker. This meant that while his Origin and his Origin Vortexes didn’t increase, he was able to strengthen his Origin.
After five minutes, Allen’s face turned back to normal as his body temperature lowered. When he opened his eyes, he could see a Tonisev and Hughton discussing something in the distance. Noticing that he had calmed his Origin waves down, Hughton left the hall as he said, “I’m going out.”
“Come here, Allen.” Waving towards him, Tonisev spoke.
And as Allen walked towards him, he pushed the boxes in front of the boy, “These are all fire berries, you’ve already tried it earlier, they will agitate your Origin and help it to become more concentrated. While these won’t help you to increase greatly in strength, it helps to build your foundation. Eating it regularly can also help to strengthen your body, with these, you have a higher chance of breaking the first seal on your Origin seal.”
“Who gave these to me?” Allen didn’t forget the word, “Reward.”
Tonisev patted his shoulder, “You got these with your own abilities, babe. Remember, these might be useful, but eating too much will inflame your Origin. That’s an irreparable injury that can cripple you, so remember to exercise moderation and increase your strength slowly for your Origin to get used to the progress.”
“Alright, there’s also another issue.” The lieutenant picked up one of the berries, “You wouldn’t mind giving me one?”
Allen nodded, and the lieutenant didn’t hesitate to take a big bite, “Even though these things are somewhat useless for me now, the taste is still pretty good. Alright, let’s talk about the more pressing issues, remember what I’ve said? From the moment you’ve stepped on Babylon, the competition between the participants have already started.”
Recounting the incident with Lucen, Allen nodded.
Shaking his head, Tonisev tossed the remaining berry into his mouth, “Allen, you might not know this. The conflict I’m talking about isn’t the vague arguments you have, it’s about the numbers. Yes, I have to congratulate you first, in the first round of popularity poll, your outstanding scores have gotten you first place, and after your fight with Lucen, you’ve further solidified your position in the first. It’s because of that, that you’ve received these rewards from the committee, these boxes of berries.”
Allen was taken aback, “What are the popularity polls?”
“When the residents welcomed you on your first day in Babylon, it was also their chance to get to know all of you. Using that impression, they vote for the participants accordingly and the results are collected by the committee within the week. Your image and your past has left a strong impression on the residents of Babylon, so it isn’t surprising that you’ve received the first place in this week’s popularity poll. With that, you were able to reach first place on the assessment rankings.” Tonisev explained, “I hope that you are able to maintain your position, remember, your every action is monitored by the committee, and they will adjust your points accordingly. For example, your performance in the training centre and your win against Lucen, these are all points you’ve won. And similarly, Lucen’s loss has resulted in a deduction his points. You are a smart child, I believe that you’ll be able to see the hidden rubrics in the grading system.”
“The assessment rankings will be refreshed every week and the rewards will change as well. This week’s rewards are the fire barries, and the next might be a First Gear demonic gun and so on. Either ways, the reward’s goal is to increase your strength. However……” Tonisev suddenly paused for a second before continuing, “The biggest benefit of the rankings isn’t the weekly rewards, but the favourable conditions you’d get during the Death Ring. Of course, there are also other benefits like attracting the attention of noble families. If they’re willing to sponsor you, you’d get plenty of other benefits other competitors won’t get.”
This time, Tonisev spent an hour here before leaving, and only after he left did Allen start to organize his thoughts. As the lieutenant had mentioned, the competition had started the moment these land dwelling kids stepped on Babylon. This competition was even made quantifiable, giving them points to determine the winner. And the winners didn’t only receive rewards like fire berries, but also an advantage in the Death Ring.
When the Death Ring began, the committee would determine the starting location for each of the participants according to their points. According to Tonisev, those with higher points would be given better starting points like places without people, or even large amounts of supplies. Either ways, the lower your points were, the more dangerous your starting point would be. And for the seven people with the lowest points, they would be placed in the same area to begin.
The outcome was obvious, these seven people had to fight to the death as soon as the game started, and only one could leave.
Allen was currently the first, and the next participant behind him was Lucy, the girl that reminded people of flames. And as he thought of her, Allen suddenly remembered that he hadn’t returned her ribbon yet.
Taking the lift to the seventeenth floor, he stood at the door nervously. Ringing the doorbell, he was quickly greeted by the sight of a woman in her thirties dressed in a thin sleeping gown, the material was so thin that her beautiful body could almost be seen. The woman looked at Allen with a pair of curious eyes, “Isn’t this the kid from District 13? What do you need?”
Taking a deep breath, Allen averted his eyes from the woman’s chest. He spoke, “Hi ma’am, I’m Allen, I’m looking for Lucy, is she here?”
“What a polite kid, come in.” Wriggling her finger, she spoke, “I’m Lucy’s teacher, Aisha. Wait here, Lucy might be taking a bath.”
“A bath?” Allen had an awkward expression, “I’ll come back in a bit.”
“No need, she should be out. Or are you afraid I’ll eat you?” Lifting Allen’s chin with her finger, she laughed as his face turned red and left.
After a moment, she waved towards him from Lucy’s room door, “Go in, kid. Lucy, that girl is calling for you.”
And as the automatic doors opened, Aisha pushed the boy inside. Regaining his balance, Allen looked around, the room had the same design as his. And as the doors to the toilet opened, a large amount of mist entered the room. Lucy was dressed in a bathrobe, and her feet were still wet as she stepped out. Seeing Allen, she waved and spoke loudly, “Hey, you’re here. Sit here, don’t just stand there.”
As Allen sat on the couch, he watched as Lucy took off the robe in front of him, revealing a healthy, youthful body as he inhaled sharply. Her skin was like silk as it reflected the light in the room, and as she comfortably stretched her body, she revealed her entire figure to Allen.
And even though Allen had turned his head as quick as he could, the entire sight had already been ingrained into his mind. He could hear Lucy’s laughter as she fumbled with her clothing, “I’d bet that if Lucen that fatass was in your position, he would’ve pounced in seconds. I can’t help but admit, you’re an actual gentleman.”
“Alright, I’m dressed.”
Only then did Allen dare to turn around. Lucy had thrown on a comfortable, loose outfit that could still show off her curves. Regardless, it was better than not wearing anything. Watching Allen, Lucy laughed again as she sat next to the boy, “Hey, don’t tell me you haven’t?”
“You have?” Allen asked.
Lucy snorted, “Until now, the male animals that tried anything with me have all been killed. That’s because I don’t like them, but you, I like you, Allen. If you want to……”
Allen couldn’t sit still as he tried to explain, “I’m actually here to return you something.”
He quickly took out the ribbon. With an “oh”, Lucy took the ribbon in his hands, but her fingers remained on his hand, gently tracing his palm as she smiled, “Are you sure?”
Allen gritted his teeth, “If you’re going to continue provoking me, you can handle the consequences yourself.”
