“Look, I already said it was a bad idea.” Lucy swung the pistol in her hands as the light faded from the gun’s body, leaving a disappearing pale golden sheen in the night. Sheathing the gun back onto her waist, she continued to pick at her dinner with her dagger as she started to eat slowly.
She ate carefully, taking a whole twenty minutes to finish her food before patting her full belly. Tossing the sand from the ground onto the fire, she glanced at the bodies on the ground one last time before leaving. But just as she took her second step, she suddenly mumbled “aiyo” as her trembling hand slammed onto a tree.
A pang of pain tore at her stomach as the taste of blood filled her mouth.
She couldn’t control herself as she started coughing out blood onto her pale hand, and the bright red liquid was accompanied with a purple tint. Her brows furrowed, this wasn’t a simple food poisoning, she was poisoned.
But when was she poisoned?
As the night passed, light started to appear from the horizon. It was still at the crack of dawn and the lands were still covered in a foggy mist, gently blown by the winds as it moved between the mountains and the trees. Light shone through the sleepy lands, giving the leaves a golden white sheen as it penetrated towards the ground. Shrubs beneath the trees shook slightly, swayed by the winds as it revealed a dark space behind it.
It was a hollowed tree.
A sabretooth wolf jumped from a higher ground, sniffing around on the floor beneath it. The two protruding fangs from its lips dug at the ground, tearing at the leaves and the mud at its feet. It snuck towards the shrub before suddenly raising its head and started digging at the shrub, revealing the human-sized hollow tree behind it.
Inside of the hole, there was the figure of a curled up human.
Allen suddenly opened his eyes as a feeling of danger crept into his heart, it was a cold sensation that blew away his sleepiness instantly.
He was met with the sabretooth wolf’s pair of golden eyes.
He didn’t have any time to react as he instinctively thrusted the long knife at the wolf’s eyes. No matter what kind of Danger it was, their eyes were always a weak point, and the sabretooth wolf was no exception. The wolf hadn’t even gotten a chance to celebrate finding a prey before it was attacked, shocking the wolf into retreating backwards.
Allen used this chance to crawl out of the hole as he held the long knife before him, his other hand grabbing onto Massacre’s handle. He lowered his body as his legs anchored to the ground, ready to pounce at any moment. This was a posture the wolf was familiar with, and it suddenly realised that the prey before it didn’t feel like a human, but rather its companion.
It was the posture wolves had when they pounced!
Sabretooth wolf, a grade three Danger specialising in speed and strength, had hollow sharp teeth filled with venom that numbed its prey. The information of this Danger quickly filled Allen’s head, it was from the “Biology Guide” book Hughton had given him. Naturally, Allen kept his eyes on the biggest threat of the wolf.
It’s fangs!
The sabretooth wolf roared, it was starving. In the past week, it had only managed to hunt a single deer, and it had been over five days since it last ate. The burning sensation of hunger scratched at its stomach as its situation became life threatening, if it continued to starve, it would die soon.
The child before him wasn’t meaty enough for the wolf, but he had a well proportioned body and had plenty of muscle fibre compared to its usual prey. These muscles could be converted into energy for the wolf, and if it were to eat him, it could live for another week.
Despite the threat the wolf felt from this boy, it’s intense hunger overpowered its instincts. Suddenly, the fur on the wolf’s neck stood, it was its signal to attack!
Allen’s eyes widened as he lowered his body even more. In that instant, the wolf pounced towards him, it’s speed was a few times faster than the trained Qiao! Allen quickly swerved to the side, but was still scraped at his shoulder. His shirt tore as a few bloody scratches appeared at his shoulder. Unfazed by its miss, the wolf quickly jumped to attack again, it was as fast as lightning!
It pounced yet again, but this time, Allen spun to the side, barely dodging the wolf’s attack. His eyes turned cold as he thrusted his long knife at the wolf’s left paw, nailing it to the ground.
In pain, the wolf roared as it struggled to escape. A dark light flashed past its eyes as it’s feelings of anger and hunger mixed together. But no matter how angry it was, it was pointless if it was dead. Allen raised Massacre above his head and swung down with a steady hand, the weapon curved in a crescent moon’s shape as it sliced off the wolf’s head.
The blood of the wolf spurted onto Allen as he felt the scorching drops slide down his face.
The fire in his red eyes slowly disappeared as Allen exhaled, sheathing Massacre and pulling out the long knife in the wolf’s paw. He walked over to the wolf’s head, using his dagger to carve out its two 20cm long fangs. It was extremely sharp, and could be repurposed into a dagger or even a trap. But the venom within the fang was the true treasure.
Taking out his bag from the tree, he kept the fangs and left without cleaning the blood off himself. The blood would leave the scent of the sabretooth wolf on him for a period of time, and the grade 3 Danger’s smell would deter most lower levelled Dangers, saving Allen a lot of trouble.
He continued heading towards the west through the thick forest. After two hours, Allen was now climbing a small slope as the sun shone brightly on his back, creating golden spots of light on the grass and shadows of the trees around him. Hiding himself within a shadow, he looked down from a patch of grass as a familiar figure appeared in his sight.
Lucy.
The girl was wearing twintails as she rested under one of the trees. Her complexion didn’t look too good, and her pale face had a green tint as her hands trembled while holding her gun.
Allen furrowed his brows as he walked out from the shadows, sliding down towards the grass.
Hearing the commotion, Lucy immediately raised her gun. If it weren’t for her complexion, her quick reaction made her seem completely fine. After realising that it was Allen, she sighed a breath of relief as she lowered her gun and revealed a forced smile.
“You’re hurt?” Allen walked over towards her.
She shrugged, “More accurately, I was poisoned. But you seem to be in worse shape than me, are you okay?”
The wolf blood on Allen’s body was already dry, leaving red patches on his body. He glanced at the wounds the wolf had inflicted, it was already taken care of with a hemostatic spray and had slowly started healing. He shook his head, “It’s superficial, I’ll be fine. But you, how did you get poisoned?”
“That’s the thing.” She smiled bitterly, “I don’t know when it happened, much less who did it.”
“Tell me your situation now.” Allen kneeled before her.
“It’s an extremely undetectable poison, probably a slow-acting one. I remember clearly what happened before taking care of two idiots yesterday night, my body was fine. But after I killed them, the poison started showing symptoms. It’s already in my blood now, I’ve been using my Origin to suppress it, but I don’t think I can hold on. If it were to go into my heart…” Her hand moved horizontally across her throat.
Allen looked at her, upset. Even in this situation, she was still extremely carefree.
“How much time do you have left?” Allen asked.
“Since the symptoms yesterday, I’ve been using my Origin to soothe the poison. I probably can hold on for another fifteen hours, thankfully, the poison isn’t too strong. If not, with my bit of Origin.” Lucy laughed, mocking herself.
“They wouldn’t dare to use a stronger poison, if not, your teacher would’ve found out. Their goal is to kill you during the Death Ring to take your points.” Allen stood up and surveyed their surroundings, “They should know when the poison would come into effect, and they shouldn’t be too far away since your symptom started showing, they’d be a day away at max.”
“But if it were like that, how would the person know your location? Unless…” Allen’s voice became lower, “They knew where you were going!”
Lucy paused, “You mean Emily?”
Ever since his conflict with Mike, Lucy’s clique had fallen apart and only Emily stayed with her. At the same time, only she knew where they were gathering. And most importantly, there hasn’t even been any announcements regarding Emily’s death, and she hasn’t appeared yet.
Considering this, she was the main suspect.
Lucy couldn’t believe it, but she wasn’t naive enough to ignore the possibility. No matter now innocent and kind Emily seemed, she was still a child representing her district in the Death Ring. If she was as kind as she seemed, she would’ve been killed in the training camp already. But what Lucy couldn’t understand was how Emily managed to pull this off.
“Don’t move, find a place to hide. Take care of yourself, I’ll find the person.” Allen spoke, “Normally, they should have an antidote with them as leverage.”
“Actually, your best option now is to leave me, getting involved in this would be dangerous for you.” Lucy shrugged, “Ultimately, our alliance would only last until everyone’s dead. And now, it’s difficult for me to even act as a partner.”
