“What are you looking at, keep slapping.” Shen Ziqiao instructed Hong Ying to continue, not even bothering to take a glance at Li Mama.

Mama Li’s expression changed, forcing a smile she walked up to Shen Ziqiao, “Third Miss, how had this unruly Nucai ( servant referring to oneself when addressing their master ) offended you? Nubi can simply punish her for you, as not to trouble you by doing this yourself.”

Shen Ziqiao looked down at her slender and pale fingers, simply stating, “I am not troubled, the one doing the slapping isn’t me after all.”

So Third Miss was not going to save this old lady some face? Mama Li thought to herself. She took in a deep breath, “Third Miss, why not speak to the Old Madam if you are upset about something.”

“Old Madam is advanced in her years, there is no need to disturb her with such trifle matters. This is merely driving out a few Nucais, unless you’re implying that I do not the right to do so?” The corners of Shen Ziqiao’s eyes tilted slightly, looking at Mama Li with a sneer.

What did she meant by those words? Everyone looked at Shen Ziqiao, panic-stricken.

Every affair within the household must went through Old Madam, irregardless of the size. And though both Eldest and Second Misses were learning the art of housekeeping from Old Madam herself, authority still lies mainly with Old Madam. Was Third Miss planning to go against Old Madam when she said those words?

Shen Ziqiao looked impatiently at the motionless maidservants, “Can I not order the lot of you anymore? Can I not even drive out a few supercilious Nucais anymore?”

Looked like she did meant it… there was a glint of fury in Mama Li’s eyes, what had possessed Third Miss today?

Mama Li gave her daughter-in-law a meaningful look.

Seeing the hint, Old wife Li wailed much louder.

What a useless thing, Mama Li could not help but wanting to slap her daughter-in-law herself, she had intended for her to yield and acknowledged her fault, not to aggravate the situation.

Brimming with mirth as she watched Old wife Li wailing, Shen Ziqiao turned to ask Mama Li, “Mama Li, as our family’s elder, do tell this Nucai that when the master wants to eat, then it is the time to eat. Let her know that ‘a dog threatening based on its master’s power* will not be tolerated.”

*(T/N: a chinese idiom that indicates the act of bullying others by using one’s master’s power and position 狗仗人势 )

It would be unlikely for Old wife Li to be treated in such a way, if she had been aware of the saying ‘to beat up a dog, one must be wary of its master’ . Everyone criticised her inwardly, though no one dared to speak up.

Mama Li went up and delivered a slap to Old wife Li, “Shut up, why haven’t you gone up and asked for pardon from Third Miss yet?” Mama Li turned to Shen Ziqiao and smiled, “Third Miss, Nubi will discipline these Nucais properly, so that they do not provoke you anymore.”

Shen Ziqiao smiled and nodded, “You are Old Madam’s most capable personal Mama, with you disciplining these contemptuous Nucais, I will be at ease. With not a main Madam at home, Old Madam has a lot on her plate managing the household despite being advanced in her years, it will be impossible to avoid people reaping benefit from this chaos* , wouldn’t you say so, Mama Li?”

With resentment and indignation welling inside, Mama Li replied, “Yes, as Third Miss says.”

“Let’s go back now.” Nodding her head in satisfaction, Shen Ziqiao returned to Qian Xin Courtyard with Hong Yu, Hong Ying and the rest of her maidservants.

Cui Ping had yet to recover from Shen Ziqiao’s portrayal of valiantness today, cautiously taking in Mama Li’s erratic changes of expression, she wondered how Old Madam had not stepped in, instead letting Third Miss causing such ruckus as she pleased. Unless Old Madam had no intention to handle this at all?
