Chapter 89
It was Friday night. As soon as Eunseo got home, she began packing.
She thought it would be only a few boxes, but it seemed that she had more things than she expected. It was partly because Jihwan and Jiye bought her so many gifts. While Eunseo went through the shopping bags, she saw that a few things were missing. She noticed that she was missing a bag and a coat given by Jihwan and a pair of shoes and a dress from Jiye.
Eunseo knew who the thief was.
She stood up and headed straight toward Seyeon’s room. Without even knocking on the door, Eunseo burst in. Seyeon, who was laying on her bed, jolted.
“What are you doing?” Seyeon screamed.
Eunseo didn’t even have to ask if Seyeon took anything from her room because the stolen items were right on the floor in front of the closet. Eunseo grabbed them without a word and was about to leave when Seyeon grabbed her arm.
“Oh, come on, Eunseo! Let me borrow them just for tomorrow! Please?!” Seyeon begged.
It seemed that Seyeon had a date tomorrow. But this wasn’t Eunseo‘s problem. These items were brand new, and even if they weren’t she would never let her stepsister use them.
Eunseo ordered, “Let me go.”
“Just for one day! Please!”
“I said let me go.” When Eunseo refused coldly, Seyeon screamed, “You’re the worst!”
Eunseo’s stepmother was watching TV in the living room. When she heard the girls fighting, she ran into Seyeon’s room. Eunseo’s stepmother yelled, “What’s going on?!”
Seyeon yelled, “I was just trying to borrow some clothes, but this bitch won’t let me! We let her live in our home for so many years, yet she can’t even let me use her things just once!”
Eunseo’s stepmother glared at Eunseo. “How could you do that to your sister? If you’re going to be so selfish, I can’t have you live here! Get out of our home!”
Eunseo had heard this many times when she was a child. Eunseo’s stepmother threatened her that she would kick her out often before. When Eunseo was little, she felt so scared because she had nowhere else to go. That was why Eunseo did all the housework and even did Seyeon’s homework.
But now, Eunseo felt relieved. She replied, “Alright. I’ll leave.”
Eunseo’s stepmother flinched, but she continued to scream, “Oh, you think you can leave? Fine. You should leave right now!”
Eunseo’s stepmother was daring her, and Eunseo answered quickly, “Alright. I’ll leave right now.”
Eunseo went to her room and began getting the boxes. Eunseo’s stepmother and Seyeon seemed shocked. They stammered, “W…what do you think you’re doing?”
“You said I should leave. So I’m leaving.”
Eunseo’s stepmother blocked Eunseo and yelled, “But you still owe us!”
Eunseo knew that this was going to happen. She brought out an envelope and handed it to her stepmother. She replied, “This is the money for next month.”
Eunseo always gave her stepmother the 700 dollars at the end of every month. Today was December 30th, so she was supposed to give the money tomorrow anyway. Eunseo knew she didn’t owe her stepmother anything, but she didn’t want to argue. She just wanted to get out of this place.
Eunseo’s stepmother threw the envelope on the floor and snorted. She screamed, “700 dollars? Are you serious? You think that’s enough? I’m talking about the fee for raising you all this time!”
Eunseo couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She raised herself, so what was her stepmother talking about? Eunseo retorted, “I gave you living expenses every month since I turned 20, so I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
Eunseo has worked since high school. She paid for her own school, university, and all living expenses. Her stepmother glared at her and muttered, “I raised you till 20, didn’t I? So you owe me.”
Seyeon added, “This is the thanks you get for helping a complete stranger, Mom. She’s so ungrateful.”
Eunseo’s stepmother eyed the boxes of expensive gifts and muttered, “You obviously found some rich man for yourself, so you need to give us some money too.”
Suddenly, Eunseo remembered how Jihwan predicted this wasn’t going to go smoothly. She realized that Jihwan was right. She felt stupid for thinking that these people were going to let her go easy. How naive could she have been?
Eunseo said quietly, “I’m leaving, so what are you going to do? Are you going to imprison me here or something?”
“You can go, but you need to leave everything here.” Eunseo’s stepmother grabbed a couple of the shopping bags filled with expensive items. They were brand new, which meant that they had to be worth tens of thousands of dollars.
“What are you doing?” Eunseo tried to stop her stepmother from taking her things. “They are mine, so don’t touch them!”
Eunseo hated seeing her stepmother touch the gifts Jihwan gave her. She tried to take them back, but she wasn’t strong enough.
Eunseo’s stepmother pushed Eunseo away. Eunseo fell on the floor and some of the shoes and bags spilled out as well.
Seyeon screamed, “How dare you attack my mom!”
Seyeon was about to hit Eunseo when the doorbell rang. Someone banged on the front door loudly.
