Chapter 4

7 min read1,791 words

As Matthew Addison was speaking, a figure gradually appeared on the glass wall that Matt was leaning against. Matt looked closely and realized it was a floating corpse in the water. He screamed and jumped back in terror.

Everyone was startled and turned to look. Inside the glass wall, a pale female corpse was floating.

Although Matthew Addison and the others looked somewhat uneasy, they quickly calmed down.

Looking at the floating corpse, the corridor fell into a heavy atmosphere, and no one felt like talking.

Chen Hang stood next to Alice. Seeing Alice hugging her shoulders and leaning against the wall, her face pale, he remembered his mission and couldn't help but ask softly, "Hey, are you okay?"

Alice managed a weak smile, "Thanks, I'm fine."

Chen Hang noticed that Alice was shivering from the cold and took off his leather jacket, "Here, it's a bit cold in this place, put it on."

Alice hesitated, "No, I'm fine..."

Chen Hang insisted, "It's really cold here, put it on."

Alice looked at Chen Hang and whispered, "Thanks," then took the jacket.

As she took the jacket, Alice's white, tender fingers touched Chen Hang, causing a strange feeling in his heart.

Alice was even more surprised.

After a moment, Alice asked gently, "Hey, before this... did you remember anything?"

Chen Hang suddenly remembered that at this point, Alice should recall a memory, and it was a memory of being in bed with him...

Without much hesitation, Chen Hang said, "No! I don't remember anything before I fainted."

Alice smiled and didn't say anything more.

Suddenly, a voice sounded in his head:

"Congratulations, Alice's affection towards you has increased by 10%..."

Chen Hang was stunned, not expecting the mission to have a completion progress. If it reached 100%, would the mission be complete?

However, a 10% increase was a good start!

Chen Hang felt happy!

...

Not long after, the mercenaries who went to scout returned.

"Sir, we found another way, but it will take more time to get there. We need to return here, then go through the B Restaurant to reach the destination. This route will take twice as long," said the mercenary named Kaplan.

At this moment, the other two scouts also returned. The female mercenary named Raine said, "Sir, we can't go that way. This floor is completely flooded."

Matthew Addison nodded, "Alright, we'll take the second route. Time is running out, let's move quickly."

The mercenaries quickly sprang into action.

Chen Hang glanced at Alice, who was also looking at him. This默契 moment made Alice smile sweetly, stunning Chen Hang.

Seeing Chen Hang staring at her, Alice smiled, "Let's go."

After everyone left, the floating female corpse in the research room suddenly opened her eyes, a pair of lifeless, gray eyes...

...

After a long detour through various research rooms, everyone arrived at a large hall.

In the hall, countless small containers were placed, each with menacing test tubes. They were about a few cubic meters in size and emitted a cold, eerie aura.

Looking at the countless containers, Chen Hang felt a chill.

Anyone who has seen "Resident Evil" knows that this is the storage area for the frozen crawlers. Once the main computer shuts down and the freezing fails, these crawlers will become the most terrifying alien creatures.

The mercenary Kaplan looked at the computer and said, "This is the B Restaurant... according to the map."

Matthew Addison walked over to look at the computer, while Matt said, "Maybe there are some secrets hidden here..."

Matthew Addison glanced at him but didn't speak. He then said to the mercenaries, "Jedi, Raine, you stay here and watch the prisoners, and guard the exit."

At this moment, the female medic suddenly said, "Sir, the gas level here is zero, so it might not have been released. Perhaps the defense system malfunctioned."

Matthew Addison nodded, "Alright, Jedi, Raine, there might be survivors hiding here. Search, but don't go too far. You must watch the prisoners and the exit, understood?"

"Understood, sir."

Both nodded.

Only Chen Hang knew that there were no survivors, only zombies.

If he remembered correctly, the brave female mercenary named Raine was bitten by a zombie here, infected with the virus, and even though she later received the virus serum, it was too late to save her.

In the movie, this brave and capable female mercenary left a deep impression on Chen Hang, and he admired her. When she died, he felt a great loss.

In the movie, he could forget after feeling sad for a while, but now, this female mercenary was standing right in front of him, a real, living person. Chen Hang found it hard to stand by and do nothing.

He was very conflicted and hesitated about whether to warn the female mercenary. After some thought, he decided against it.

Even before entering the movie, the evolution system had warned him not to change the plot. Even if Chen Hang didn't care about that, how could he tell her?

He couldn't just go up to her and say, "When you see a stranger, shoot them in the head without hesitation."

Such a statement would likely expose him.

"OK!" said the mercenary leader Matthew Addison, "Let's move. The rest of you come with me."

Chen Hang said nothing and followed the group, leaving the B Restaurant.

They passed through a corridor and arrived at a room blocked by a steel door.

In the center of the room were three computers, which seemed to control the door.

The mercenary Kaplan started cracking the door's code without being told.

Soon, with a "beep," the steel door opened, revealing a corridor.

This corridor was different from the others, with crystal-like walls on both sides, dark and seemingly harmless.

Chen Hang, however, looked at the corridor with a serious expression, knowing that this was the true path of death, with lasers that could kill without a trace.

Seeing Alice standing at the entrance, curiously looking around, Chen Hang, though knowing she wouldn't go in, instinctively grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

"Don't go in, stay with me."

Alice was surprised and looked at Chen Hang curiously.

Chen Hang, thinking about his mission, said half-sincerely and half-deliberately, "Sorry, I don't know why, but I feel... I should know you, and... you give me a sense of familiarity."

"Yes, familiarity!" Chen Hang affirmed, "So... I want to protect you, I don't want to see you in danger."

As soon as he said this, Chen Hang blushed, as he had never said such things to a woman before.

These words were lines he had learned from a romantic movie.

For the mission, he had to say them, even if it made him feel embarrassed.

"Congratulations, Alice's affection towards you has increased by 40%, current affection: 50%..."

Hearing this, Chen Hang was overjoyed and couldn't help but sneak a glance at Alice's reaction. She lowered her head and said nothing.

What Chen Hang didn't see was that Alice's face was now tinged with a smile.

It must be said that Chen Hang, the rookie, had good luck.

If he had said these words to a woman he didn't know well, she would have thought he was insincere!

How could he say such things after just meeting her, with no emotional foundation?

Even in America, where people are more open, no one would believe it!

But Alice's brief memory fragments were all about her and "Spencer," even including intimate moments. This made Alice believe that they were a couple.

So Alice not only didn't feel repulsed but thought Chen Hang was genuinely concerned for her and stayed by his side.

This small incident didn't affect the group's mission.

At this moment, the mercenary leader Matthew Addison was carefully walking through the corridor.

Suddenly, the walls on both sides lit up, startling Matthew Addison, who quickly called Kaplan, who was controlling the computer.

"Don't worry, it's just motion-activated lights."

Hearing Kaplan's voice in his ear, Matthew Addison relaxed and continued forward until he reached the door at the end of the corridor.

Taking out the password transmitter from his pocket, he placed it on the door and called, "Transmitter in position."

"Received!" Kaplan began cracking the code.

With Kaplan's "Done!" the door on the other side of the corridor slowly opened.

Matthew Addison carefully observed the surroundings, confirmed there was no danger, and said to his team, "Move forward."

As soon as they entered the corridor, something unexpected happened!

Just like in the movie, both doors closed simultaneously, trapping several mercenaries inside.

Everyone panicked. Matthew Addison and the other mercenaries cautiously observed with their weapons, and he asked through the communicator, "Kaplan?"

Kaplan, in a hurry, said, "It seems to be some kind of dormant defense system that was triggered when we passed through the door."

Matthew Addison said, "Then let it stay dormant!"

Kaplan, sweating profusely, typed furiously on the keyboard, "I'm trying!"

"Everyone, stay calm, don't move."

Just as Matthew Addison finished speaking, a mercenary pointed to the other end of the corridor, "What's that?"

The lights on the walls suddenly dimmed, and a thin laser line appeared between them, rapidly approaching the mercenaries.

"Take cover!"

Matthew Addison reacted the fastest, pushing two people to the ground, but even so, one mercenary's hand was sliced off, causing him to scream in pain.

"Medic! Medic!"

The female medic, however, didn't move. Her head slowly separated from her neck and rolled to the ground, her face still showing the expression of death.

"Hurry, something is killing them! Oh God! Open the door!" Alice shouted in panic.

Kaplan, sweating profusely, said, "Almost there."

At this moment, a second laser line formed.

This time, it formed at leg height. A mercenary tried to jump to avoid it, but the laser line suddenly changed direction, rising and cutting him in half.

Matthew Addison, with his agile movements, dodged the second laser line. When he landed, he was the only one left alive in the corridor.

As the third laser line formed a web-like pattern, he only had time to curse, "Damn," before being sliced into pieces.

At this moment, Kaplan finally opened the door, but the corridor was now filled with only chunks of flesh, with no one alive.

The remaining three, including Chen Hang, looked at the chaotic laser corridor in silence, unable to speak for a long time.

Although he knew the outcome, Chen Hang still felt nauseous at the sight of the bodies. Alice closed her eyes, unable to bear the sight.
