Chapter 5

After a long while, Kaplan, the only surviving mercenary, finally stood up, swallowed hard, and said with a strong effort to suppress his fear, "We must complete the mission."
His whole body was trembling, as if trying to comfort himself, he said, "Her defense system is already shut down; there's no danger anymore."
Although he said this, his speed in moving through the corridor was barely faster than a snail's, clearly filled with fear.
Alice and Chen Hang exchanged a glance and followed him.
Chen Hang did not stop them, as he knew that this corridor was indeed temporarily safe.
However, as they passed the bodies, Chen Hang collected all the weapons and ammunition from the dead mercenaries.
Because the real danger was about to begin.
Or rather, the true purpose of his coming to this movie was about to unfold.
The three arrived at the central computer, and Kaplan began preparing to shut down Red Queen.
"Get out! Get out! You can't come here."
Suddenly, a holographic image of a little girl appeared behind them.
"Don't listen to her. She's Red Queen's hologram, modeled after the main programmer's daughter. She will try to confuse us and stop us from shutting her down," Kaplan said while methodically setting up the machine to shut down Red Queen.
Chen Hang and Alice both watched the little girl hologram of Red Queen carefully.
Red Queen, not only in appearance but also in voice, said, "Shutting me down will cause the main power to fail, with severe consequences."
Kaplan was unmoved and continued to assemble the machine.
"Please, don't shut me down."
Seeing that she couldn't persuade them, Red Queen suddenly changed her tone, saying menacingly, "You will all die here."
Hearing this, Kaplan gritted his teeth and pressed the shutdown button.
Instantly, the entire Hive lost power and fell into darkness.
In the darkness, Chen Hang closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and felt a bit nervous.
Because next, zombies, mutant dogs, and Lickers would appear one by one.
After a while, the backup power started, and the Hive partially lit up, providing enough light.
Kaplan took out the motherboard of the central computer, "Let's go back and regroup with the others."
The three began to head back.
On the way, Chen Hang handed Alice a pistol and whispered, "Take care of yourself."
Alice took the pistol, smiled, and remained silent.
Kaplan also noticed this and saw that Chen Hang was holding a submachine gun, almost fully armed.
However, he was naturally timid and didn't say much.
Silently, the three returned to the B Restaurant, where they heard gunshots.
Kaplan was startled and ran toward the source of the gunshots.
"Follow me!" Chen Hang told Alice and followed.
When the three arrived, Chen Hang found that, as in the movie, the female mercenary named Rain was covered in blood, bandaging her hand.
"How did you shoot?" Kaplan asked in surprise.
"We found a survivor, but she was insane," Rain said nonchalantly while bandaging her injured hand.
"You shot her?"
Rain raised an eyebrow, "She was insane, she bit me!"
At this moment, the mercenary named J.D. shouted from a distance, "She's gone, she's disappeared."
"Nonsense," Rain walked over, her face full of anger.
"She was lying here, but now she's gone."
"Damn!" Rain was incredulous, "I shot her at least ten times."
Alice said, "There's some blood, but not much."
"It looks like it's starting to clot," Matt squatted down, examining the bloodstains carefully, "But that's impossible; blood doesn't clot before death."
Only Chen Hang noticed that Matt was secretly picking up the handcuff key that Rain had accidentally dropped.
However, Chen Hang didn't plan to expose him.
"This place is strange!" Matt said, "Can we leave now?"
Rain, reloading her gun, said coldly, "We're not going anywhere until the other team members arrive."
Hearing this, Kaplan's face turned sad, "No one is coming."
Rain thought he was abandoning his teammates and became furious, "What the hell are you saying?"
Seeing Rain's temper about to flare, J.D. quickly pulled her back, "Wait."
J.D. made a gesture to be quiet, "Listen carefully!"
Rustling sounds, like heavy objects rubbing, came from a distance and grew closer, followed by heavy breathing from all directions.
Everyone's hearts raced, and the fear of the unknown made them tense and look around nervously.
Chen Hang took a deep breath, knowing that the terrifying things were coming.
He released the safety on his submachine gun, moved closer to Alice, and whispered, "Stay close to me."
Alice nodded and looked deeply at Chen Hang.
Finally, the sounds grew closer, and everyone saw the source.
A group of researchers in lab coats, with distorted and pale faces, slowly approached.
Some of their bodies were twisted into strange angles, some had lost their eyeballs, and some even had half their faces missing, making them grotesque and terrifying.
Zombies!
All of them were zombies, surrounding the group.
Seeing this bizarre scene, everyone was both afraid and at a loss, unsure of what to do.
"Don't come any closer, I'll shoot."
When Rain fired the first shot, Chen Hang no longer needed to hide, aiming at the zombies' weak spots and pulling the trigger without hesitation.
Chen Hang, who had never handled firearms before, was suddenly skilled, hitting nine out of ten shots, as if he had a natural talent.
Clearly, the expert-level firearms skills provided by the system played a significant role.
"Congratulations! You have completed the side mission ①: Kill at least five ordinary zombies. You have earned 300 evolution points..."
"You have killed additional zombies, earning 50 evolution points..."
"You have killed additional zombies, earning 50 evolution points..."
"You have killed additional zombies, earning 50 evolution points..."
...
A series of notifications sounded in his mind.
Chen Hang was both nervous and secretly pleased, the nervousness coming from the zombies.
Soon, Chen Hang had cleared a large area.
In contrast, the others were surrounded by more and more zombies.
"Damn, why can't we kill these things?"
"Ah! Shit, I've been bitten."
Chen Hang saw that most of their bullets hit the zombies' bodies, not their weak spots, so they couldn't kill the zombies.
Moreover, in their panic, many bullets hit the containers.
"Be careful!"
Chen Hang grabbed Alice and dove to the ground!
Boom—
A container exploded, the shockwave knocking everyone down.
The zombies then surrounded them, causing the group to scatter.
The mercenaries fled toward the central computer, and J.D., while opening a door, was grabbed by the zombies inside and met a tragic end.
"Congratulations, Alice's affection for you has increased by 10%, current progress: 60%..."
Chen Hang held Alice's delicate body, her faint scent making him very intoxicated, as this was his first intimate contact with a woman.
Although he wanted to stay like this with Alice, it was clearly not the time.
"Let's get out of here."
Chen Hang stood up, taking Alice and Matt, and ran in another direction.
On the way, Matt disappeared, likely having gone to look for his sister's clues during the chaos.
"God! What's wrong with those people? Why can't we kill them?"
Chen Hang and Alice arrived at a bright room, and Alice was still agitated.
"They are no longer human," Chen Hang said expressionlessly, checking his remaining ammunition. In the short time, he had used two magazines, killing at least forty zombies. Now, he only had one magazine left.
Alice was silent, clearly shocked by the zombies.
After a while, Alice said, "Your shooting is very accurate, have you been professionally trained?"
When Chen Hang was shooting the zombies, Alice was right beside him, amazed by his shooting skills. However, the chaos prevented her from asking more.
Chen Hang, without hesitation, used amnesia as an excuse, "I don't know, I can't remember anything before my amnesia."
Alice didn't ask more and began to observe the surroundings. Suddenly, she pointed to the end of the corridor outside the room, "Let's check that out."
Chen Hang was about to agree when he suddenly remembered that in the movie, Alice encountered a group of mutant dogs ahead.
These creatures were much faster than the slow-moving zombies.
Although he knew that Alice would burst into action and kill the mutant dogs in the movie, Chen Hang couldn't be sure if his body could avoid the dogs' attacks.
If he got bitten and infected with the T-virus, it would be disastrous.
"Don't go there!" Chen Hang quickly stopped Alice, "I feel something is off there. Let's leave this place."
After Chen Hang's series of "unnecessary kindness," Alice, while not completely obedient, at least didn't oppose his decision.
Without hesitation, Alice nodded in agreement.
Before Chen Hang could relax, a voice in his mind made him pale.
"Warning, you have altered the movie plot..."
"Due to the alteration of the movie plot, the butterfly effect has been triggered, and you have a new mission..."
"New mission: Protect the male lead 'Matt' and the female lead 'Alice.' Mission reward: 3000 evolution points. Mission failure: Deduct all rewards from this movie, and you will not be able to enter the Resident Evil series movies again..."
Chen Hang's face changed dramatically!
He gritted his teeth and cursed, "Damn!"
Seeing Chen Hang's pale face, Alice asked, "Hey, are you okay?"
Chen Hang shook his head, "Let's get out of here quickly."
On the way out, Chen Hang was uneasy.
He didn't expect that a moment of cowardice would result in such a damned mission?
If he failed, he would lose all his rewards?
Wouldn't he have wasted his time in this movie?
(The plot change is probably related to those mutant dogs. If I take Alice back and kill the dogs, maybe the damned mission will disappear.) Chen Hang thought.
As he hesitated about whether to take Alice back and kill the dogs to see if the mission would be canceled,
The evolution system seemed to know his thoughts and gave a warning:
"Note: Once a new mission triggered by a plot change is issued, it cannot be undone."
This warning made Chen Hang give up, and he had to accept the bitter consequences.
