Chapter 38: Lend Me Your Perfume!
7 min read1,655 words
Since they still had military training in the afternoon, Tang Chong and the others didn't drink too much at lunch.
When they returned to the dormitory, they found quite a few people waiting at the door of Room 307. They were discussing heatedly, the noise indicating that something exciting had happened.
"Hey, move, move." Hua Ming, the big guy, was the best choice for clearing the way. He led the charge, shouting loudly, "Hey, guys, you're blocking the way. We can't get in."
"They're back, they're back." Someone shouted excitedly.
"Which one? Which one is Tang Chong?"
"The one with glasses. Wow, he's my idol, taking on six people by himself, and they were from the school basketball team. Too awesome."
Black lines appeared on Tang Chong's forehead.
This has already spread?
He just beat up a few people.
Tang Chong indeed only beat up a few people. The problem was, they weren't ordinary people but a few troublemakers who often bullied others in school.
What caused even more of a stir was the rumor that he picked them up one by one and threw them into the ink pond.
Since the founding of Nan University, such an incident had never occurred.
"Brother. They're all here to see you." Liang Tao said with a smile. At lunch, Liang Tao had toasted Tang Chong three times and apologized for his rash behavior on the first day. Tang Chong accepted Liang Tao's apology and drank three cups with him. From then on, their relationship finally got on track.
For Liang Tao, becoming Tang Chong's friend was much luckier than being his rival. Although they had only been in contact for two days, Tang Chong's various abilities had already left a deep impression.
"Hidden dragon in the depths." He thought of this phrase. So, he called him "Brother" with genuine willingness.
"If we put Tang Chong in a cage and charge five yuan per viewing, wouldn't we no longer need to ask our parents for living expenses?" Hua Ming whispered.
"Everyone, please disperse." Tang Chong said with a smile. "As you can see, I'm not a handsome guy, so you can all relax."
Most of the onlookers were male students from the same building. After hearing about the incident at noon, they quickly found the dormitory where the protagonist lived and waited for them to return.
Hearing Tang Chong's words, they all smiled kindly.
"Good job. You've done us freshmen a favor."
"Brother, do you know martial arts? Teach us?"
"Right. We'll follow you from now on."
*Slam*
After closing the door, the room finally became quiet.
As soon as Hua Ming entered, he ran to take care of his rabbit, Xiao Guai, and said, "Brother, not bad. I see those guys really admire you. I might lose my title as the most charming man in 307 to you. I'll just be the most handsome guy."
Liang Tao was furious and said, "You're the most handsome guy in 307, where does that leave me?"
"Equal." Hua Ming grinned. "We're equal."
*Knock knock*
There was a knock at the door.
Liang Tao, worried it might be more admirers, shouted, "Who is it?"
"It's me, Lu Yifei." The person at the door replied.
"Lu Yifei? Our class president?" Hua Ming turned and asked.
"Seems so." Liang Tao said. He looked at Tang Chong and asked, "Should we open the door?"
"Please let him in." Tang Chong said.
So, Liang Tao opened the door and said with a smile, "Class president, what brings you here?"
"I'm here to pay my respects to the hero." Lu Yifei said with a smile. He was not tall, wore glasses, and had two dimples when he smiled. He was a very refined and clean-cut boy, giving a very good impression.
"They've exaggerated it too much." Tang Chong said modestly. "They had just finished playing basketball and were out of energy, so we four brothers got a bit lucky."
Tang Chong didn't want the reputation of taking on six people alone, so he pulled Hua Ming and Liang Tao in as a shield.
"Hehe, it takes some courage to take on the school team." Lu Yifei said. "I have no business. Just came to introduce myself. I'm in 304. If you have time, come to my room for a smoke. I have some Xifeng wine from my hometown. It's quite good."
"Thanks." Tang Chong said with a smile.
"Alright, you rest. I won't disturb you." Lu Yifei waved and left the dormitory.
"What was that all about?" Liang Tao asked, puzzled.
"Hehe, don't you know?" Hua Ming said with a grin. "He wants to be the class president."
"Class president? Isn't he already the class president?" Tang Chong was also confused.
"Right now, he's just the temporary class president appointed by the counselor. The freshmen in our psychology department will be divided into three classes. The boys are still mixed together for military training. After the training, each class will elect a class president. Being a class officer in college is very beneficial. They organize various activities, and any rewards from the school are usually given to class officers. Plus, the experience helps a lot with job hunting after graduation. Our school is not as competitive, but in places like Renmin University or Peking University, the student council president can get a faster promotion in government jobs after graduation," Hua Ming explained.
"Being appointed as the temporary class president right after entering college shows that this guy either has connections or is good at socializing. Because the temporary class president usually becomes the permanent one. Everyone is familiar with him, and he handles all the notifications and tasks. No matter what, everyone will vote for him."
"What does this have to do with Brother?" Liang Tao asked. Although his father was a government official, he was far less perceptive about these matters than Hua Ming.
"Because he feels threatened." Hua Ming looked at Tang Chong. "Brother, you've made him feel threatened."
"I have no intention of being the class president." Tang Chong said. The incident today was so big that even Bai Su would probably want to talk to him. He had no interest in being a class president; he wanted to go back to being the warden of Henshan Prison.
"The problem is, he doesn't know that." Hua Ming said.
Tang Chong smiled and lay down for a nap.
After the initial excitement wore off, everyone started to complain.
Training in the morning, training in the evening, standing at attention, at ease, turning left, turning right, military boxing—everyone had been looking forward to handling guns. But they were quickly disappointed. There was no shooting practice this year.
This made everyone even more disheartened about the military training. But it had only been a few days, and they were just at the beginning of a long journey.
The instructors knew the students' psychology well. As the afternoon training was about to end, Instructor Li Tieshu shouted, "At 8 PM tonight, gather at the school's main playground."
"Ah!" The students groaned.
"Tonight, no training. Just singing and dancing." Li Tieshu grinned. "Mixed singing."
"Ah!" The boys howled.
"You can take a leave if you don't want to come." Li Tieshu smiled. His simple face even showed a hint of mischief.
"No leave. We won't take leave." The boys declared.
"Dismissed." Li Tieshu waved his hand and said.
After dinner, as soon as they returned to the dormitory, Hua Ming and Liang Tao started fighting over who would use the bathroom first.
They played rock-paper-scissors. Liang Tao won by cutting Hua Ming's paper and got to go first. Hua Ming, holding his rabbit Xiao Guai, walked around the room, muttering, "Xiao Guai, dear Xiao Guai, what should I do with you? How can I take you there?"
Li Yu was playing a game on Tang Chong's Apple laptop, and Tang Chong was lying on the bed reading a magazine. Hearing Hua Ming's muttering, he asked, "What do you mean, what to do with it?"
Hua Ming pulled a chair and sat in front of Tang Chong, asking, "Which part of me do you think is the most charming?"
"Do you want the truth or a lie?"
"The truth."
Tang Chong pointed to the rabbit in his hand and said, "It's him."
"Right." Hua Ming slapped his thigh. "Great minds think alike. I thought the same. Think about it, if I don't bring Xiao Guai, will those girls even notice me, Hua Ming?"
"..."
"But, what reason can I give to bring the rabbit? If the instructor sees, he'll skin me alive."
Tang Chong was thoroughly defeated by Hua Ming and said, "I can't help you with that."
Then, he shooed Hua Ming away, leaving him to solve this headache-inducing problem on his own.
After Liang Tao finished his shower, he dried his hair, shaved, and applied various cosmetics to his face. He changed into clean clothes and took out a bottle of Dior perfume from his small suitcase, spraying it under his armpits.
"Do you have body odor?" Tang Chong asked.
"No." Liang Tao said. "I'm afraid it will be hot tonight, and my armpits might smell. Plus, girls like clean, fresh-smelling men."
"Is that necessary?" Tang Chong asked.
"Very necessary." Liang Tao said with the air of an experienced person. "Think about it, our department has a lot of wolves and few sheep. Only twenty or so girls. How many guys will be competing for each girl? It's not that we have to date them, but as guys, if all the girls are taken by other guys tonight and we get nothing, sitting there watching others have fun, where would we put our faces?"
Tang Chong got up from the bed, opened the wardrobe to find clean clothes for a shower, and said to Liang Tao, "Lend me your perfume later."
