Yu Zi Huan’s birthday was at the end of August, and school would start in a few days. When Yu Zhi Le was in school, she would usually spend all nighters during this period to catch up on her school assignments. However, Yu Zi Huan didn’t have this problem at all as he had completed his assignments in July.
Yu Zhi Le asked him several times how he wanted to spend his birthday and if there was anything he wanted for a present. However, Yu Zi Huan said that she didn’t need to prepare anything special and she could just cook him a bowl of longevity noodles like his grandmother used to do. Yu Zhi Le saw that her question was unanswered, so she simply went with her own plans. Nowadays, she would sometimes go to an internet cafe at night to publish novels. Consequently, taking advantage of when Yu Zi Huan wasn’t around, she secretly went to the mall to buy an electronic dictionary for him.
On Yu Zi Huan’s birthday, Yu Zhi Le bought a small Black Forest cake birthday cake. She inserted candles and sang a birthday song. After Yu Zi Huan blew out the candles, Yu Zhi Le took out the well-wrapped electronic dictionary and said, “Don’t be angry that the cake is small. Also, I bought this for you to study, but don’t constantly use it to play games.”
Yu Zi Huan received that box dumbfoundedly, and hadn’t snapped out of his trance when Yu Zhi Le turned on the light. He kept his head down, it was unknown what he was thinking about.
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
Yu Zi Huan raised his head. Within his eyes, there was more doubt and confusion than being pleasantly surprised when receiving gifts. He had long wanted to ask why Yu Zhi Le would be so nice to a stranger. She was so good that she had to scrimp and save on herself and spend half of her salary to buy him a birthday present.
Yu Zhi Le didn’t expect him to react this way. She scratched her head and stared blankly for a few seconds. Then, she said jokingly, “Maybe it is because I have ‘mother’s cancer [1] ’.”
So she couldn’t help but be nice and considerate towards Yu Zi Huan.
“What cancer?” Yu Zi Huan furrowed his brows and stared at her. His voice was raised and sounded very ear-piercing.
Yu Zhi Le realised that back in 2005, a lot of people didn’t understand the meaning of the ‘mother’s cancer’ joke. Yu Zi Huan wouldn’t think that there was really such cancer, right?
“Nothing. Nothing. I’m just kidding.” Yu Zhi Le quickly reassured him. “Today is your birthday. Don’t be upset. The electronic dictionary… I saw that almost everyone has one nowadays and thought that it is really quite helpful for studying so I bought it for you. From the looks alone, it is a bit expensive but it can be used for many years. Isn’t this quite worth it?”
Yu Zi Huan’s eyebrows relaxed. He looked down in silence for a while. Then, he seriously looked at Yu Zhi Le and said, “My grandmother died of liver cancer. Don’t make jokes like this in the future.”
Yu Zhi Le nodded repeatedly and agreed. She jumped to her feet and prepared the longevity noodles. Two bowls of steaming hot noodles were brought to the table. However, she noticed Yu Zi Huan didn’t eat the Black Forest cake, rather he removed the candles and divided the cake into two pieces and set them aside.
Originally, this cake was just for one person and it was bought for Yu Zi Huan who rarely ate snacks. However, Yu Zhi Le still followed his wishes. After eating the longevity noodles, the two of them shared it and only then did some colors returned to Yu Zi Huan’s face.
After the start of the school year, Yu Zi Huan was promoted to the third year of junior high school. Dismissal for the end of the school day would be an hour later than before, and sometimes he would still need to go to school for makeup class on the weekends. Actually, he wasn’t really free to help out at the mini-mart.
Today, Yu Zhi Le went to the vegetable market after work to buy vegetables. On the way back, she saw Yu Zi Huan walking home with his head down. She called out to him happily and waved at him.
Yu Zi Huan raised his hand unnaturally as a greeting to her, and buried his head again avoiding Yu Zhi Le’s gaze.
Yu Zhi Le was puzzled and only when she got closer could she see the wound at the corner of his mouth. In a flash, she imagined a scene where the infatuated fat school bully, Xie Cheng Long, hit the lonely helpless little poor thing. She became angry and distressed. She reached out with the intention of grabbing Yu Zi Huan’s chin to check his injury but he dodged it.
Yu Zhi Le didn’t insist on looking at Yu Zi Huan’s wounds. She frowned and sternly asked, not intending to let him muddle through easily, “Xie Cheng Long bullied you again, didn’t he?”
“No.” Yu Zi Huan looked downcast and slightly tilted his head to the side, not looking at Yu Zhi Le.
“Then, how did the wound on the corners of your mouth come about?”
“I bumped myself.”
Yu Zhi Le didn’t know why Yu Zi Huan wanted to conceal the truth. She stared at him intently for a long time but he still didn’t make eye contact. She couldn’t help but be exasperated, “Fine. Then, hit the other side to get the same wound to show me.”
Yu Zi Huan remained silent. He lowered his head and turned around to prepare to enter the doorway.
Yu Zhi Le was infuriated. Previously, she hadn’t found Xie Cheng Long to settle scores with him regarding the cheating accusation. This time, if the injury was not so conspicuous and wounded on the face, Yu Zi Huan probably would still intend to hide it from her. Furthermore, according to this manner, she did not know if there was a similar situation in the past, only Yu Zi Huan didn’t tell her.
“No, you are coming with me.” Yu Zhi Le took a few steps forward and pulled Yu Zi Huan’s hand as she walked towards the other direction. “We have to demand an explanation. We can’t keep letting him bully people like this.”
Yu Zi Huan tried to break away from Yu Zhi Le’s hand several times but she clutched it tightly and pulled it back. When they arrived at Xie Cheng Long’s doorstep, he even put his hand up to stop Yu Zhi Le from ringing the doorbell.
“What exactly are you afraid of?” Yu Zhi Le glared at him and did not understand him. “It’s useless for you to be afraid of this kind of person and avoid him. What you want is to put things to rest, but he will only think you are easy to bully.”
Yu Zi Huan opened his mouth upon hearing this, but did not speak when Yu Zhi Le rang the doorbell.
[1] 妈癌(mā ái)- Mother’s cancer is not really an illness. It describes that a person is especially kind, shower care to others, worry for other people and think about others.
