When Xie Cheng Long’s mother answered the door and saw that it was Yu Zhi Le, her saggy face tightened and she plastered on a smile, “Isn’t this Xiao Yu? Why do you have the time to honour your presence here? Don’t you have to cook for your younger brother?”
Yu Zhi Le also plastered a smile and pulled Yu Zi Huan closer to her. “He has to be able to eat even after I have cooked for him. Your family’s Xie Cheng Long beat up my younger brother like this. How can he still open his mouth?”
Xie Cheng Long’s mother narrowed her eyes to sweep over Yu Zi Huan’s face. Her eyes rolled upwards and she responded with a fake smile, “Which eyes of yours saw that it was Cheng Long who hit him? Besides, isn’t it normal for children to play around with one another? This minor injury is nothing.”
“Sorry, I don’t have a good memory. You said it is normal for kids to play around with one another, so who was the one who went to my house last time and kicked up a fuss about medical bills? Why didn’t you say it was a minor injury and was just playing around?”
The double standard was unmercifully poked at Xie Cheng Long’s mother’s face, her eyes flickered when he saw Xie Cheng Long walking down the stairs. She hurriedly twisted her bucket-like waist and pushed aside Yu Zhi Le and Yu Zi Huan to greet him. Afterward, she took the school bag from Xie Cheng Long and asked about his day, even if the response was impatient and disdain, the smile filled with piled up fats remained the same.
But within seconds, she gave Yu Zhi Le and Yu Zi Huan a fake smile, “Cheng Long, tell Elder Sister Yu Zi Huan that you two are good friends and how would you deliberately hit him, isn’t that so?”
Xie Cheng Long glanced at Yu Zhi Le disdainfully and walked over and heavily patted Yu Zi Huan’s shoulder, “My mother is right. We are indeed good friends, aren’t we, Zi Huan?”
Yu Zi Huan, who was half a head shorter than Xie Cheng Long, looked extraordinarily thin in front of his burly frame and he was looking down and remained silent. When he was patted by Xie Cheng Long, he swayed before stabilising himself. He slowly looked up and there seemed to be a flashed of a fierce glint in his eyes. However, there was none of the fierceness when he finally lifted his head up, he was calm again and stared at Xie Cheng Long for two seconds. Then as if there were countless stars in his eyes, he suddenly smiled, “That’s right. We are friends.”
Yu Zhi Le drew in a breath of cold air and glared at Yu Zi Huan in anger and confusion. But because of his attitude, she could not argue with Xie Cheng Long and his mother, so she could only look at their high and mighty [1] attitude and was so angry that it caused internal injuries.
Before she and Yu Zi Huan departed, she heard Xie Cheng Long shouting towards them, “Hey, you can lend me that electronic dictionary to play again. If you had been so obedient earlier, there would have been no trouble at all.”
Yu Zhi Le looked towards Yu Zi Huan and understood that it was the electronic dictionary she gave him that caused the trouble. She thought that it was definitely because Xie Cheng Long saw that he had it and wanted to grab it and play with it, but Yu Zi Huan refused and was beaten up.
The two of them returned home and went about their business in silence. It was until Yu Zhi Le finally couldn’t hold herself back when they were eating dinner and put down her chopsticks to ask, “Why don’t you let me settle the score with Xie Cheng Long? If you give in to him like this, he will only get worse, do you believe that?”
Yu Zi Huan’s long and thick eyelashes fluttered as his gaze fell on the bowl she placed the chopsticks, “I don’t want to cause you any more trouble.”
Yu Zhi Le had already done enough for him. He didn’t want to make her angry or upset again because of him and didn’t want her to be in a situation where she would be embarrassed by Xie Cheng Long’s mother or her form teacher again.
“You….” Yu Zhi Le’s face scrunched up, not knowing what to say about him, “I am so…
“I know you are a good boy who is sensible, but I am getting mad at you for being sensible right now.”
Yu Zi Huan furrowed his brows and Yu Zhi Le was defeated by the moisture in his eyes. She let out a sigh and said, “Didn’t you ask why I was so nice to you? Don’t be angry when I say it. I think you have it hard.”
Having to face the sinister world too early at a young age, Yu Zhi Le just wanted to protect him for a little longer so that he could face it when his heart was strong enough.
“I just want you to be like all the other children, to have someone to share when you are happy, someone to comfort you when you are sad, and someone to turn to when you are in trouble without hesitation. That’s all. So when you are in trouble or unhappy just approach me, don’t keep it all bottled up inside, okay?”
Yu Zi Huan no longer frowned. He looked at her with some bewilderment in his eyes, which also held a strange bright glimmer.
Yu Zhi Le also froze for a moment. This kind of frighteningly brilliant eyes made her feel it was somewhat familiar. But soon she came back to her senses, smiled and said, “When you are two years older, I won’t necessarily be willing to listen if you want to ask me for advice, so cherish the opportunity you have now.”
Yu Zi Huan also smiled, nodded and continued eating.
Yu Zhi Le looked at him and thought that he had accepted his explanation. The pent-up anger in her heart had almost dispelled, so she resumed her usual pattern of chopping vegetables and making small talk. However, she missed out on the coldness that flashed through Yu Zi Huan’s eyes.
