“I’m not gonna, but…” Gu Yeyu muttered.
“But what?” Bai Weijin asked further.
‘But Jiran has been turning a blind eye to my love for him all these years. He has turned me down decisively when I bared my heart.’
Gu Yeyu thought to herself.
Bai Weijin sighed.
“To be honest, you shouldn’t have asked me about the love stuff. My parents had a failed marriage, so I don’t believe in love from an early age. But you’re different, you were born into a loving family.”
Gu Yeyu looked at Bai Weijin. She had learned of the latter’s family background before.
“You know what? Jiran holds the same attitude towards marriage as me.” Bai Weijin looked Gu Yeyu in the eye.
The spoon fell from Gu Yeyu’s hand.
“I… I know that.”
“That’s right. Jiran lost his mother when he was young, and his father is selfish enough to care about the interests of the Chu Family only. Besides, he has a stepmother who hates his guts,” said Bai Weijin.
In this way, how could he believe in love and easily accept others’ love for him?
“I know his stepmother is a real nuisance, but he rarely tells me about his family, for those are totally meaningless, he said.” Gu Yeyu bowed her head.
Bai Weijin patted her on the head.
“Because he doesn’t wanna get you involved in his family war.”
Gu Yeyu struggled to digest her words.
‘I’ve been getting along with and being good to Jiran in the way I deem right, without thinking about whether he wants it.’
‘In other words, I’m a selfish person, aren’t I?’
“Jiran may love and protect you as your brother does, but, given his parents’ failed marriage, it’s hard for him to bare his heart to you and love you as you want. Have you ever tried to understand him really?”
It was rare for Bai Weijin to make such emotional comments, but she genuinely wanted to help them.
Chu Jiran had almost the same experience with her. Both of them didn’t believe in love, except that she was cold outwardly while Chu Jiran inwardly.
People like him, in fact, were more difficult to be moved than Gu Yeze.
On hearing her question, Gu Yeyu was even more upset and fell silent.
Bai Weijin looked at the girl who was lost in thought.
In fact, Chu Jiran didn’t necessarily have no affection for Gu Yeyu. After all, they’d known each other for so many years. Besides, when Gu Yeyu was nearly raped by Zhao Lei, Chu Jiran looked even more furious than her brother.
But what he needed was a partner who could share his sadness rather than making him laugh.
“I guess I understand what you said,” Gu Yeyu lowered her head.
Bai Weijin looked at the girl.
She had no idea whether the girl really understood it. Gu Yeyu was one of her few friends and she hoped the girl could live a happy life.
Having watched Gu Yeyu get into a car, Bai Weijin headed for the company. She was curious about what Gu Yeze was doing now.
Bai Weijin pushed open the door of his office.
Gu Yeze didn’t raise his head, for nobody in the company but Bai Weijin dared to enter his room without knocking on the door.
“You seem to be looking for a salary deduction, aren’t you? Going out every day,” spoke Gu Yeze in a careless way while browsing through the paper at hand.
Bai Weijin sized him up and found he was not angry about it.
“As I remember, eh… it’s you that don’t allow me to come here to do my work.” Bai Weijin rolled her eyes.
On hearing this, Gu Yeze put down the paper.
“I can give you some leave again if you want.”
Bai Weijin shrank back. ‘I shouldn’t have teased him.’
“I went to put things into perspective for your sister. I think I deserve a salary increase.”
Gu Yeze just shook his head, “You don’t need to do that. She’ll come around in a few days.”
Bai Weijin couldn’t help but wonder whether Gu Yeyu was his biological sister.
It was about time to knock off. Bai Weijin was feeling a bit peckish and knocked on the desk Gu Yeze sat by.
“For all the work I’ve done, how are you gonna entertain me?” Bai Weijin smilingly stared at Gu Yeze in the hope that he would take her out for a good meal.
“We’re going to eat at Grandma’s.”
Bai Weijin paused.
Grandma Gu changed her attitude towards her after the farce caused by Bai Hongbo.
Then happened a lot of things, leaving no time for Bai Weijin to go back to Gu house to see her.
“Did Grandma invite us to?” After a long while, Bai Weijin asked nervously.
Gu Yeze made no reply but held her hands.
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep you company.” Gu Yeze didn’t mind it in the slightest. For him, bygones were bygones, and nobody could intervene in their marriage.
He hoped that she would win the approval of his family.
Even if she could not, his mind would be never changed.
To be honest, Bai Weijin was reluctant to go there. Grandma Gu made her feel the warmth of family which her dad could not, so she was very grateful for the old lady’s care.
Although they had known each other for months only, they’d built a good relationship.
That dislike Grandma Gu showed towards Bai Weijin upset her very much, though she had a strong mind and hid it well.
These days Bai Weijin pretended to have forgotten that.
Yet now she had to face it.
“Must I go?” Bai Weijin was aware of the answer, but she still wanted to persuade Gu Yeze to give up the idea.
“Yes”, there was a note of finality in his voice.
Ok.
Bai Weijin finally arrived at the house, but with slight reluctance. Someone petite jumped to her immediately after she got out of the car.
“Weijin, I’m glad you come!” Gu Yeyu’s body also hurt, and next second, she was pushed aside by her brother.
“Gu Yeyu, watch yourself.” Gu Yeze’s face darkened when he saw the painful look on Bai Weijin’s face. Gu Yeyu went pale.
The appearance of Grandma Gu saved her from being punished.
“What are you doing there? Come in. Yeyu, you must do something wrong, don’t you?”
It was long since Bai Weijin heard the voice. She froze with anxiety.
