Unexpectedly, things went very smoothly. At this point, they were closer to locating Gu Baiqi.
“Well… You act a little faster than I thought!” Just before Chu Jiran managed to track down Gu Baiqi, Bai Weijin’s mobile phone rang. She answered it, and a processed male voice came by the phone.
On hearing what he said, Chu Jiran and Bai Weijin both changed their countenance. ‘No wonder we went so smoothly… Turns out he knows everything.’ Both of them were lost in thought.
“What the hell do you want? What did you do to my son?’ Bai Weijin asked anxiously.
“What do I want? Money only. You can rest assured that this kid is T-A-K-E-N good care of.” He seemed to speak through clenched teeth.
“Tell his father to prepare five million, and I’ll send you an address fifteen minutes later. Don’t try to pinpoint me, or…” He didn’t finish, but Chu Jiran and Bai Weijin both got his threat.
While Bai Weijin was thinking about what to say, the man hung up.
“Okay. Since we’ve been informed, I’ll go prepare the money he needs.” Chu Jiran obviously attached high priority to this matter.
Bai Weijin nodded slightly. A feeling of guilt came over her. ‘I could be even more powerful so as to rescue my son on my own without turning to others for help.”
She could do nothing but recall over and over again the phone call she just received. The more she recollected, the more terrified Bai Weijin became. It sucked that someone was well aware of everything they did. She felt the man might want more than money. ‘But what did he want?’
Ten minutes later, Chu Jiran came back with a lockbox in his hand.
“Thank you…” murmured Bai Weijin. Deeply grateful for all his help, Bai Weijin could think of nothing else to say at the moment.
Chu Jiran shook his head and forced a smile, answering comfortingly, “It doesn’t matter, Weijin. I see the child as mine!”
For five minutes in a row, the two stared at the phone until it rang up. Bai Weijin answered it.
“Seems what I ask for is ready.” The man sounded relaxed. “Dream Factory. The child’s biological parents only. You have half an hour.” Then he hung up before they could react.
There’s no time to think it over. Bai Weijin and Chu Jiran took the lockbox and drove towards the factory he mentioned.
“What does he mean by ‘the child’s biological parents’?” Bai Weijin started to hesitate as she thought of this. She dared not gamble with her son’s life!
Chu Jiran paused, with a pained expression on his face. ‘Yes, I’m not Baiqi’s father after all. Whatever I’ve done, I cannot replace Gu Yeze as his parent.”
“Then I call Gu Yeze.” Chu Jiran pursed his mouth and said.
“Watch the wheel. I’ll call him.” Bai Weijin shook her head, replying. The phone kept beeping, leaving her on tenterhooks. ‘Gu Yeze…’.
A few seconds later, she finally got through. Both of them remained silent. Actually, the phone call came as a surprise to Gu Yeze and even gave him a glimmer of hope. ‘What’s the call for?’ He couldn’t help making wild guesses.
Bai Weijin took a deep breath and opened her mouth. “Gu Yeze, Baiqi was kidnapped. Can you head for Dream Factory now?”
What Bai Weijin said dashed Gu Yeze’s hopes. ‘Baiqi was kidnapped? What had happened? Why me?’ Questions popped into Gu Yeze’s mind one after another.
“Well… Bai Weijin, how can you think I’ll help your and Chu Jiran’s child? Instead, I’m glad to hear the news!” Despite his anxiety for Gu Baiqi, Gu Yeze spoke bitingly.
Bai Weijin’s cheeks flushed scarlet. She was stuck for words for a while. The thought that Gu Yeze didn’t trust her and was unwilling to save Baiqi lingered on in her mind.
Gu Yeze regretted as soon as those words came out of his mouth. Having heard no response from Bai Weijin, his feeling of remorse, though, disappeared. He gave a snort and hung up.
At the sight of Bai Weijin’s face turning pale, Chu Jiran couldn’t help but asked, “What’s up? Did Yeze…” Bai Weijin interrupted him, “It’s all right. Let’s go first.”
Twenty minutes later, Bai Weijin and Chu Jiran arrived at the Dream Factory, where there’s nothing left but a ruin. Bai Weijin’s heart was in her mouth. ‘Has my baby been here for over twenty hours?’ The very thought of what Gu Baiqi might have suffered during the day made Bai Weijin hurt.
“Weijin, shall we go inside or wait here for Gu Yeze?” Chu Jiran asked with a frown.
“Wait five minutes, and we’re going in if he doesn’t come then.” Bai Weijin replied after some hesitation. ‘This is my only opportunity. What if he doesn’t come?’ Bai Weijin wasn’t sure whether the man learned about Gu Baiqi’s true identity.
Chu Jiran nodded and waited together with Bai Weijin, with the lockbox in his hand. “Stop, stop crying!” A tall man scolded the baby in his arms, his brows furrowed, though he tried to be gentle.
The little thing never stopped crying, from last night till now. After a nap, the baby burst into tears again. ‘What lousy luck! I shouldn’t have carried him off.’
When he finally stopped crying, the man dialed a number, holding the little thing in his arms, “Mr. Gu, everything’s going well. Remember to get the remaining balance ready.” A mocking smile tugged at the corner of his mouth while he made the report.
Seconds later, the man gave a nod and hang up. He turned his head to look at the child and signed. ‘What a poor thing!’
“Let’s go.” Five minutes passed. Bai Weijin stood up and said to Chu Jiran. The waiting was a pure torture for her.
