In the ward lay a mummy-like patient, his black-and-blue face wrapped in gauze bandages.
The man was nobody but Yan Sheng.
He had come around, but seriously injured, he found no strength to sit up.
He was aware of Bai Weijin’s scheme, but it was too late. Yan Sheng felt much deeper hatred for Bai Weijin who betrayed their old relationship than for himself coveting Gu Yeze’s woman.
Needless to say, gossip about him was going around the whole city, where he could probably no longer stay for years to come. While he was lost in thought, the door of the ward flew open.
Yan Sheng turned his head with all his strength.
The sight made him go all weak.
It was Gu Yeze.
Yan Sheng’s legs started to tremble. The scene of several strong bodyguards beating him up was still fresh in his mind, and Gu Yeze standing aside that night was just like God who manipulated people.
Now Gu Yeze was standing a stone’s throw away looking down at him.
Yan Sheng managed to endure the pain in his face, asking, “What do you come for?”
Gu Yeze frowned at him disapprovingly. How should Bai Weijin get engaged to such a bloody fool who looked so ugly before?
“Two hundred million. Sell Yan’s Group to me.”
Gu Yeze was more like giving an order than discussing a deal with Yan Sheng.
Yan Sheng’s eyes dilated with astonishment. How could Gu Yeze trifle with Yan’s Group? If the company was acquired, he would totally lose his dignity.
“You can… never…” Yan Sheng spoke haltingly.
Gu Yeze opened his mouth before Yan Sheng could catch his breath, “To agree or not to agree, that’s your own business. If the acquisition fails, I shall deal the same blow to Yan’s Group as what I did to Bai family.”
During his stay in hospital, Yan Sheng was almost cut off from the outside world. Besides, his mother never told him about what had happened to Bai family, in case his recuperation was badly influenced.
Nevertheless, Yan Sheng soon realized that Bai family must have met with a terrible fate, for its strength could definitely not match Gu’s. He had no doubt that Gu Yeze was able to wipe out Yan’s Group overnight.
A wave of remorse came over Yan Sheng, but his pride wouldn’t allow him to yield to pressure from Gu Yeze. He replied, “I kid you not, I won’t sell Yan’s Group to you.”
How conceited! Gu Yeze cast a contemptuous glance at the beaten man.
“I don’t give a damn about your small company, but since you had the audacity to harrass my wife, you have to take the consequences.”
Gu Yeze finished talking and turned away. Yan Sheng would like to beg for mercy but was choked up.
His family had hired a gang of bodyguards to watch over him, while Gu Yeze walked out unimpeded.
Yan Sheng stared at his receding figure in despair.
When Gu Yeze came out, his bodyguards let go of those hired by Yan family.
He spoke on the phone, “Go all out to capture Yan’s Group’s market, whatever the cost, and acquire the company within a week.”
Bai Weijin knew nothing whatsoever about the matter. Now she was sitting in her office, listening to Zhang Lanxin chatter away and gossip.
Word had it that Gu Yeze fixed the villain who intended to harm Bai Weijin at the banquet, and there were many of Gu’s Group’s executives present.
News travelled fast.
The rumor was naturally dispelled that Bai Weijin would soon be deserted by her husband.
“Sister Bai, what a happy marriage you have! President cares so much about you. If only I met a man like him!” Bai Weijin was examining the documents Zhang Lanxin handed to her, and the latter, rubbing her chin thoughtfully, kept rattling on while waiting.
Bai Weijin knocked Zhang’s forehead with a pen, “Mind your own business, lady of leisure.”
Zhang Lanxin let out a cry of pain and hurried out as fast as she could.
It occurred to Bai Weijin that the misunderstanding between her and Gu Yeze helped them realize their love for each other instead when her phone suddenly rang.
“Who is that?” Bai Weijin felt there was something strange about the phone call. The number looked familiar, though she couldn’t figure out for now who was calling.
“This is Uncle Yan speaking.” The voice of a middle-aged man came over the phone.
It was Yan Liwei, Yan Sheng’s father. Why did he call her?
Bai Weijin had absolutely no inkling of Gu Yeze’s plan. Yan Liwei said, “Given your engagement to Yan Sheng once before and your old friendship, I wonder why you pushed us so hard.”
She pushed them too hard? She did nothing more than exposing Yan Sheng’s evil intentions. Why in the world was the nuisance scolding her?
Bai Weijin made a point-blank reply, “Nothing, just an eye for an eye.”
“What a ‘an eye for an eye’! Yan Sheng merely played a trick on you. What has he done to deserve this vengeance?”
“Merely played a trick? Do you think it’s just a small trick? Uncle Yan, wake up and smell the coffee before you say something.”
Yan Liwei suddenly flared up. He added, “Even if Yan Sheng did anything wrong, President Gu already fixed him. Now he is in hospital, and you suffered no actual loss. Is it worthwhile to ruin us completely?”
It seemed that Yan Liwei had learned everything. Fully aware that his son was in the wrong, how could he have the audacity to assail her relying on his seniority?
Considering that she hadn’t dealt any blow to Yan’s company, Bai Weijin reckoned it was Gu Yeze that did it. She answered coldly, “If your son had any brain, he would know it didn’t work to regret after making a blunder.”
Yan Liwei knew he was in the wrong, but he didn’t expect he would be looked down upon by a junior. He straightened up his neck, asking, “Yan Sheng already got what he deserved. Why can’t you show any mercy to him?”
Bai Weijin retorted, “Your son was merciful enough to get my sister into bed.”
Yan Liwei almost stamped with rage.
Yet Bai Weijin was unwilling to let him off. She continued, with a look of complete disdain on her face, “Fish begins to stink at the head.”
Yan Liwei could scarcely suppress his anger. He thumped on the table, “What? How could you speak to me like that?”
Bai Weijin sneered, “Now you’re putting on airs. Even if you have one foot in the grave, there’re ways and means of dealing with you. As for your son, I’ll certainly pay him back for what he’s done.”
Her words put Yan Liwei in a rage and left him gasping for air.
In no mood to argue with him, Bai Weijin said a few words and put the phone down immediately:
“Neither Bai Yinya nor Yan Sheng can get away with it. God help them if I catch them in the act, for I’ll certainly make them regret having done harm to me then.”
Yan Liwei’s carrot and stick approach in getting Bai Weijin to let off Yan’s Group failed. He looked much older than before at the very thought that Bai Weijin seemed harder to deal with.
