Bai Weijin was aware that Zhang Lanxin made funny remarks to amuse her.
But there was one thing for sure: Jiang Sisi was an out-and-out fool.
To deal with her required no brains, but… Eh, was such a silly woman to Gu Yeze’s taste?
The very thought upset Bai Weijin.
She didn’t go home after work but called on Grandma Gu.
Maid Wu opened the door and looked at Bai Weijin in surprise, shouting, “Grandma Gu, you have a special guest!”
The old woman took off her presbyopic glasses and saw Bai Weijin clearly. She beamed with pleasure, “I’m more than glad to see you, Weijin. Come here.”
“Grandma, I just come to see you. Please don’t bother, I’ve had dinner already.” Since her mother died, Bai Weijin was never cared about, but from Grandma Gu did she feel the warmth of a family.
Maid Wu had intended to prepare dinner, but she paused at those words and sized Bai Weijin up.
Grandma Gu opened her mouth first, “Weijin, why doesn’t Yeze come back with you?”
Bai Weijin’s heart skipped a beat. She thought for a moment before answering, “He’s quite busy these days and thus can’t spare the time to visit you.”
Grandma Gu was shrewd enough to sense that things weren’t quite right between them.
However, she mentioned nothing about it and only made chit-chat with Bai Weijin who longed to derive some comfort from the old lady.
Bai Weijin had no idea whether she had a chance to meet the old lady in the future.
Night fell imperceptibly. It was time for Grandma Gu to go to bed. Bai Weijin got up and said goodbye to her.
Grandpa Gu replied smilingly, “Take care on the roads, my girl.”
Bai Weijin took a look at Grandma Gu and Maid Wu and turned away.
After she left, Maid Wu hemmed and hawed, “Yeze and Weijin…”
Grandma Gu patted Maid Wu on the arm, “We’d better not meddle in their affairs. Yeze is clumsy of speech and doesn’t know how to please his wife. Besides, it’s quite normal for young couples to bicker. They are a good match, I promise you.”
Mai Wu thought for a moment and nodded, “I was overanxious. Bad blood between husband and wife never lasts the night.”
…
Bai Weijin came home and opened the door. Before her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she felt a considerable force pulling her over.
Gu Yeze glared at the woman in his arms, livid with rage.
“Where have you been?”
Gu Yeze asked her in a hoarse voice, his breath stinking of cigarettes.
Bai Weijin calmed herself down and broke away from him.
“It’s beyond the scope of your charge, President.” Bai Weijin answered coldly.
“You call me what? President?” His tone was aggressive.
Bai Weijin stood still, not uttering any word.
Gu Yeze suddenly came to whisper in her ear in a mellifluous voice, “Bai Weijin, have you got jealous?”
Even he himself didn’t find he looked at her with expectant eyes.
Bai Weijin made no reply. Quite a long while later, she spoke.
All the lights were off, and nothing was visible in the house. In the pitch darkness appeared ringing Bai Weijin’s voice, “Gu Yeze, I want a divorce.”
Gu Yeze was dumbstruck. He asked after a fair while, “What?”
Bai Weijin repeated it without hesitation, “I want a divorce.”
Gu Yeze stood upright.
“Take that word back, Bai Weijin!”
Anyone else would be scared off by his fierce look, yet Bai Weijin remained unmoved.
“We’ve made certain rules to be observed before our wedding, but it seems that we both have failed to stick to them. So, I suppose our marriage should be annulled before the situation worsens.”
Gu Yeze suddenly turned around, seizing Bai Weijin by the throat, “T-A-K-E-T-H-A-T-B-A-C-K.”
His voice was husky and angry.
Bai Weijin was almost unable to breathe, yet she raised her head, stubbornly confronting him.
Despite the difficulty in making a sound, she managed to utter a word, “No.”
Gu Yeze didn’t withdraw his hand until she was about to suffocate. Bai Weijin fell over immediately.
“Bai Weijin, you’ll regret having said that. I give you one last chance to ponder it.”
Before Bai Weijin answered, he turned around and went upstairs.
Bai Weijin’s voice came from behind, “It’s my fault to fall in love with you, though I knew you are not a good partner in marriage. In this case, we might as well be a nominal couple as before.”
Considering her mom’s failed marriage, Bai Weijin felt nobody on earth would be faithful to his or her spouse forever, and she always lacked sense of security in a relationship.
Once spotting a sign of danger, she would retreat into her hard shell.
She had built up a protective shell of indifference around herself.
Gu Yeze paused for a moment and then strode off.
Bai Weijin strenuously sat up, pretending not to hear Gu Yeze’s slamming the door shut or the big sound coming from his room through the soundproof walls.
She had made up her mind, and no one could make her change that.
For this reason, she had gone to visit Grandma Gu this evening, for she would have little chance to meet the kind lady later on, except at a banquet or a ceremony.
Also, she couldn’t call the lady ‘Grandma’ any more.
Bai Weijin lay in bed, sleepless all night.
Life went on, and she was not the type to collapse after breaking up.
A tense atmosphere dominated the office. Her colleagues were sensible enough to make no fuss.
Bai Weijin stared blankly through the window at the busy people outside when Zhang Lanxin nipped in and sat in her chair, her eyes filled with tears.
Bai Weijin frowned, opened the door and called out, “Zhang Lanxin, come in.”
Zhang Lanxin stood in front of Bai Weijin without a word. Tears poured from her eyes.
“Tell me what’s up.”
Bai Weijin asked the girl patiently, though she’d made a very close guess already.
Zhang Lanxin kept silent for a while before she sobbed, “Jiang Sisi not only deliberately delayed handing me the document but let her people taunt me.”
Zhang Lanxin stamped her feet in anger while saying.
Bai Weijin had guessed correctly about it.
But she didn’t expect Jiang Sisi would cheekily abuse her power to bully Zhang Lanxin.
Bai Weijin’s face darkened and she said to Zhang Lanxin, “Let’s go.”
She walked towards Jiang Sisi’s office, and Zhang Lanxin hurriedly followed her over.
