Chapter 109- Apocalypse (10)

“Has everyone finished reading the information?” Duan Hongwu, the current chief of intelligence, said solemnly as he crossed his arms.

The powerful leaders sitting around the conference table stayed quiet. No, it was more accurate to say that they were shocked speechless.

Gu Anran looked at the thin packet of paper in her hands. This light packet held such heavy and scary content.

The Zombie King. A Tier-9 zombie who can control all the zombies below his tier. If there is a Tier-9 Zombie King, does this mean that there are Tier-8 and Tier-7 zombies below him?

One must know that currently the highest-tiered ability user in their base was only at Tier-8. To the Tier-9 Zombie King, a Tier-8 ability user can easily be crushed underneath his thumb.

After Tier-5, a huge gap of power appears between each tier. A Tier-6 user could defeat several Tier-5 users, and a Tier-7 user could do the same with a bunch of Tier-6 users. So what did this say about a Tier-9 Zombie King? This meant the Zombie King had enough power to level the entire base with a wave of his hand!

The Zombie King was also leading tens of thousands of zombies to exterminate each base one by one. Meaning that after each base is defeated, he gains another army of corpses instantly. By now, his army has reached nearly one million members. Unless several of the larger bases unite together, it will be impossible for a single base to resist the endless waves of zombies. The medium and small bases have no way to resist them at all and most have crumbled into ruins in less than three days.

Furthermore, the ability users in all of these bases have been turned by the Zombie King. Most ability users cannot be infected by a zombie simply from scratch and require a large amount of the virus to be injected into them in order to turn. However, the Zombie King produced a special toxin that cannot be compared to the other zombies. With just a tiny scratch he turned them into mutant zombies. Thus, with this large addition of mutant zombies, the zombie army grew even more powerful.

Most people have fled north already. Unless they had no choice but to stay, almost all of the powerful people from the southern bases have fled north. The steady stream of refugees could be seen on the tents that continued to increase outside of their base.

Every day, more people clamored outside of their base, demanding to be let in. If it weren’t for the doors being firmly sealed, the news would have probably made it inside and caused chaos. By then it would be difficult to manage the sheer pandemonium that would erupt among the humans. So they have tried their best to block any and all of this news.

“We currently have 16 Tier-8 users, 97 Tier-7s, 478 Tier-6s, 1780 Tier-5s, 3681 Tier-4s, 13760 Tier-3s, 4872 Tier-2s, and 194,770 Tier-1s.” The presenter slowly read the number of ability users they currently had in the base.

Although the numbers sounded like a lot, it was not enough to stop the zombie army. There are nearly a million ordinary humans in the base. If even one of them gets scratched, the virus will spread faster than they could react. It would be impossible to stop and with the Zombie King’s special toxins, an ability user could be extracted and disinfected too. So if for example if one of their Tier-8 users is scratched, their chances of victory will become even lower.

Why not evacuate the people? This is not possible for a large base as it is impossible to persuade almost a million people to move to the safety of the base. This would only cause chaos and accelerate their defeat. Not to mention, where can they evacuate too? This is the safest place. They can’t go into the mountains or they might be killed by mutant plants. The sea is out of the question too as no one knew what creatures lurked there. They couldn’t evacuate to the sea anyway since they didn’t have any boats.

“I think we should focus on cultivating a Tier-9 user and some more Tier-8 users. Then during the fight, while the Tier-9 user distracts the Zombie King, the other Tier-8 users will take care of the other zombies. We should also ensure that Mengyan reaches Tier-9 before the battle begins.” Mu Qingli raised her eyes and said.

There were no objections. They needed a Tier-9 user to face the Tier-9 Zombie King and as the highest-tiered healing ability user, they needed Chi Mengyan to reach Tier-9 as soon as possible. The healing ability was their only defense against the zombie virus as the healing ability can reverse the virus. Thus, healing is one of the most crucial resources.

They decided to distribute all the crystals in their warehouse to the Tier-8 users, with Chi Mengyan, Duan Hongwu, and Mu Qingli, who were at the peak of Tier-8, getting the majority of the crystals. Then they also summoned all the healing ability users and gave them crystals to raise their Tiers to at least Tier-7. The remaining crystals were given to the Tier-7 users and then some teams were sent out to gather more in order to raise everyone’s tiers.

“Hah…It’s like fighting a war.” Gu Anran sighed as she carried the large bag of crystals she was given.

“We have no choice. If we fall here, we’ll all become homeless.” Hong Qingyi teased.

“Where are Qingli and the others?” Gu Anran glanced around and realized they had arrived in the residential area. They lived in a high-tiered area where only Tier-8 users stayed and the ability users around them all carried their own large bags of crystals with serious faces. It seems that all of them are going to try to raise their tier.

“I don’t know! The four of them got their crystals first and then disappeared.” Hong Qingyi shrugged. If it weren’t for a couple of annoying people coming up to ask them questions just now, how could they have lost them? She was angry just thinking about it!

“They were probably needed for something. Wait a second for me, then you can accompany me to the water tower.” Gu Anran took out her key and opened the door to their villa. She then placed her crystals in her room and looking at the other big bag of crystals on the other bed, it seems that Qingli had returned first but then left in a hurry. Seems like she was urgently needed somewhere, but Gu Anran did not think much more on the matter before making her way out the door. As long as it wasn’t anything dangerous, she would not restrict Mu Qingli’s movements. The other party was probably pulled to do some construction again.

“Let’s go, let’s go already!” Hong Qingyi yawned and waved at Gu Anran. The two of them walked out of the house and made their way to the water tower. The water tower has been expanded again and now became a super-large water-storing place. For water-ability users like her, their jobs were to produce enough water to fill up this tower. This was basically her job every day.

“Tsk, tsk, when are you going to start taking your job seriously?” Hong Qingyi asked as she looked around. Only some low-tier water-ability users were still working and most of the high-tiers were at home resting. The highest water-ability user here is Gu Anran who is a Tier-8 water ability user.

“Please, there is a war of attrition coming, so it’s better to let them save their energy now. Otherwise, during the battle, their mana will be sapped and by then no one would care if they have enough water to drink or take a bath with.” Gu Anran whispered angrily.

If the zombies led by the Zombie King start a full-on siege of the city, then most of the ability users will have to be constantly fighting on the battlefield. Once their mana finishes regenerating, they would be forced to immediately go back to the battlefield. By then, the fighters would be so exhausted from fighting that they wouldn’t have any time to refill the water supply.

“Yes, yes, I get it already.” Hong Qingyi took out a piece of chocolate and stuffed a piece in her mouth. She also stuffed a piece into Gu Anran’s mouth to silence her.

The sweet silky taste of chocolate melted on Gu Anran’s tongue and eased her heavy heart just a little bit. Her water production also sped up just a little bit.

“Hah~ Who do you think will win in the end? The 100,000 supernatural ability users or the millions of zombies in the zombie army?” Hong Qingyi asked.

“Who knows? Well, as long as Qingli and Duan Hongwu stay in command, although there will be some casualties, we will definitely win. Anyhow, we just need to protect them to the best of our abilities and then wait for them to kill the Zombie King. Once the war is won, our main missions will be completed as well.”

Gu Anran smiled. The Zombie King is the male villain they must defeat and the last main mission they haven’t completed. However, they did not worry much about it since it was set in stone that the Zombie King was to be defeated by the female lead, Qingli.

Four hours later, as the night sky slowly turned into dusk, Gu Anran withdrew her hands and stretched her stiff body. She prepared to leave and shook the sleeping figure of Hong Qingyi who was sitting on the bench against the wall.

“Hey, wake up, it’s time to go back.”

“Wh-huh? Oh….you’re done…” Hong Qingyi blinked sleepily as she slowly woke up.

“Yup, time to hurry back or else I’ll starve to death!” Gu Anran said huffily. She had been working so hard for the last four hours, yet Hong Qingyi got to sleep on the side like a pig this whole time.

“Yeah, alright, I’m hungry too!” Hong Qingyi patted her grumbling stomach and jumped up, her eyes full of eagerness as she wrapped an arm around Gu Anran’s waist and then shouted: “Let’s go!”

“Wait-” Gu Anran didn’t even finish before she felt some vertigo and then in a flash arrived back at their villa. Tsk, tsk, the speed ability is such a convenient power. Perfect for robbing a house and/or fleeing the scene of a crime.

However, just as Gu Anran was about to take out a key to open the door, she heard Duan Hongwu’s voice from the other side of the door.

“Qingli, Mengyan, do not forget that all of this is just a game. Everything here is fake.”

Game? Fake?

Gu Anran and Hong Qingyi looked at each other. Then both of them stopped what they were doing and listened quietly.

“I know. I don’t need you to remind me, I already know.” Mu Qingli’s cold voice replied.

“Don’t be so harsh, Duanwu. I think Qingli and Mengyan both perfectly understand that when this world finishes, our game can finally be released. Just think about it, the first virtual reality game that can be played when you’re sleeping. I’m sure it will be a success once it hits the market and neither of them will do anything to jeopardize this project.” Song Qingyan’s gentle voice called out soothingly, but his words did not soothe Gu Anran’s and Hong Qingyi’s heart but instead delivered a heavy blow to their emotions.

Game? So everything they’ve experienced, all the worlds they’ve been through was just…a game? What the fu*k is going on? A game that you can play in your sleep? Does that mean all the worlds they have experienced before were simply virtual simulations? And these four knew all along, but chose to not tell them and even watched as they ran around like a pair of idiots, making a fool of themselves this entire time?

“Wenyan, this is the first project that the four of us worked together on. If this project becomes a success, we will become founders of a new gaming platform. So of course Qingli and I hold much value to this project.” Chi Mengyan said lightly.

“Very well, but what about Anran and Qingyi? They are not NPCs created by us. In fact, it is rather strange….could this be some sort of data error? We’ll need to go back and make some adjustments to this aspect, but if there is no improvement, I’m warning you now that we can only delete these two NPCs. Is that clear?” Duan Hongwu said seriously while asking for the others’ opinions.

“En….” x3

Everything was simply strings of code, of data….were they simply just abnormal data that popped up in the code? Even if they weren’t, Qingli had promised so readily to delete them….does that mean she had simply viewed their time together as just ‘playing a game’ this entire time? Then was everything before all fake?

Gu Anran clenched her fists tightly, but her shoulders dropped down in defeat. What could be a bigger blow than this?

She stopped Hong Qingyi from rushing into the villa and together they left quietly.
