Chapter 110- Apocalypse (11)
“Huh? Why haven’t Anran and the others come back yet?” Mu Qingli looked at the clock that showed it was long past seven and put down the book in her hand with a look of confusion.
“I don’t know.” Chi Mengyan put down the food that had been reheated several times now and frowned slightly as she looked at the darkened sky outside.
“Didn’t we see them at the water tower earlier on our way back, right Wenyan? They’re probably still working.” Duan Hongwu propped his cheeks against one hand as his other hand played with some flames, forming and reforming a sword casually. This ability to shape one’s fire was only unlocked at Tier-6 and the duration it can stay in this shape depended on one’s Tier.
“Qingli, Mengyan, think about it, how can two grown adults just simply disappear? They’ll be okay.” Song Wenyan said reassuredly as he continued to read his book.
Is he right? But why did she feel so anxious in her heart? Mu Qingli pursed her lips, as a sense of restlessness filled her heart.
“No, let’s go find them! How can they still be working at nine o’clock!” Mu Qingli stood up and prepared to leave.
Suddenly a series of knocking sounded at the door.
Mu Qingli rushed to open the door, “An-….you are….Lin Shu?” Mu Qingli had thought it was Gu Anran and opened the door quite happily, but unexpectedly there was an unfamiliar man standing on the other side. Mu Qingli has seen him around before and remembers that he is one of the few Tier-7 ability users.
“Um…this…I’m looking for An-…for Miss Gu Anran.” Lin Shu scratched his cheek in embarrassment, his expression full of nervousness as he rubbed his hands together.
“Why are you looking for her?” Mu Qingli studied the man’s expression and his nervous movements. Could it be….he is one of Anran’s admirers?
“I-I….” Lin Shu couldn’t seeme to complete a single sentence due to his nerves before he finally took a deep breath and said with a tone full of determination, “I like Miss Gu Anran, so can you please invite her out for a chat?”
“She doesn’t like you.” Mu Qingli said angrily, almost crushing the doorknob in her grasp due to her anger. She took a deep breath to calm down. Unexpectedly, someone actually dared to come and steal her beloved from her! Are they tired of living?
“H-How do you know if she likes me or not? I am confessing to Anran, not you!” Lin Shu was slowly growing annoyed.
Anran?!!! Ho, and he says it so naturally!! At this moment, Mu Qingli really wished she could call down a pillar of lightning and burn this person who was so determined in digging his one grave!
A hand pressed down on Mu Qingli’s shoulder to calm her down. Chi Mengyan stuck out her head and said calmly, “The person you are looking for is not here.”
“Huh….really…but I heard him say that they returned a few hours ago. Although he did say that they had run off without even entering the door…” Lin Shu scratched his head as he muttered to himself.
“Wait, what did you just say? Ran off?” Mu Qingli raised an eyebrow.
“Oh….I have a friend who lives near here and asked him if he saw Anran earlier. He said that he saw her around five when Miss Hong, with her speed ability, appeared suddenly in a blink of an eye! Scared the living daylights out of him. However, he didn’t know what happened because they didn’t even enter the door and just stood in front of it for about five minutes before they left…..” Lin Shu explained, then as if he thought of something, he added, “He also said that their faces suddenly became downcast during that five minutes and they left with rather gloomy expressions. Hmm, I wonder what happened.”
Five o’clock…..Mu Qingli’s face turned pale. Anran…she couldn’t have heard….
“Tell me which direction they went!” Chi Mengyan grabbed Lin Shu by the collar and asked through gritted teeth.
“I-Ah! They went that way.” Lin Shu pointed in a direction where one of the entrance/exits to the base was located.
“You can leave now, this matter does not concern you.” Chi Mengyan loosened her grip on Lin Shu’s shirt and closed the door with a bang.
“Hey! Hey! What’s going on!” Lin Shu couldn’t figure out what was going on, but seeing that the person he was looking for was not there, he could only leave with a frown on his lips.
“Qingli, Mengyan, what’s the matter?” Song Wenyan looked up and asked immediately when he saw the pale and uneasy expressions on the two women’s faces.
“Anran and Qingyi overheard our conversation from earlier.” Mu Qingli quickly said as she grabbed her coat.
“What did you say?!” Song Wenyan stood up in shock.
“It’s exactly as it sounds. We need to chase after them, you two search around the base in case they are still here.” Before the two men could react, Chi Mengyan rushed out with Mu Qingli.
Meanwhile, in a villa about ten kilometers away from the base.
“Hey, eat something at least?” Gu Anran held a broth in front of Hong Qingyi who was lying despondently on the bed, with a ‘I wish I could die’ expression on her face.
“You still have the stomach to eat…” Hong Qingyi said weakly.
“Why can’t I eat? What, should I go starve and commit suicide just because I’m heartbroken? Although it hurts my heart, what they said is right. None of these worlds have been real. I’d rather pick myself up, adjust my attitude, and find someone else to love when I return to the real world.” Gu Anran placed the soup onto a small table and added some instant noodles into it before turning around to eat from her own bowl.
“You’re right, you’re right.” Hong Qingyi got up from the bed, took a sip of the broth, and then rolled up her ladies, “Alright, I’m going to make the most delicious meal today! Little Ran-zi, take out all the ingredients you have!”
“Woohoo!”
One hour later….
“Ah…I feel satisfied. It’s been a long time since I’ve had hot pot.” Hong Qingyi rubbed her stomach and burped contentedly.
“Do you want to stay here tonight?” Gu Anran found some clean sheets and blankets to place onto the bed.
“Obviously! Then after tonight, we’ll go find that Zombie King, kill him, and then return to the real world!” Hong Qingyi pumped a fist into the sky.
“But we can’t beat the Zombie King. We’re only at Tier-8.” Gu Anran shrugged.
“Then let’s just buy a weapon that kills him in one blow from the system’s shop!” Hong Qingyi pulled up the system’s shop as she spoke. After coming to this world, they have been continuously killing zombies from ordinary to Tier-7 zombies. Their current point total was 223,568.
When they asked the system for the weapon in question, a dozen pages appeared before them. So they first eliminated the ones they couldn’t afford.
“Anran, what do you think of this one?” Hong Qingyi pointed at the picture of something resembling a cannon. Gu Anran leaned over and read the description.
Star Dawn Cannon, a weapon that is stronger than a regular single-target attack weapon. That is to say, it’s range of attack is at least 20 kilometers wide, however it does not cause pollution and long-term damage to the environment like nuclear bombs. So other than the area of it’s attack turning into a large crater, there are no mushroom-shaped clouds or other large area side effects. However, the one disadvantage is that it needs to be charged for 3 days before it can fire. Furthermore, it can only fire one shot at a time so if they wanted to use this they must accurately confirm the Zombie King’s location.
However, as long as the shot is fired, the Zombie King will not have enough time to rush out of its range. At the same time, if the shot is off by a certain amount, then the sneak attack opportunity is lost and their next try will not be as easy.
“I think this one works.” Gu Anran nodded. With a 200,000 points price tag, this is the best weapon they can buy with their points combined.
“Then we’re buying it!” Hong Qingyi confirmed the purchase and a 3-foot long canon appeared in front of them.
“Does this indicate that it’s chagrin?” Gu Anran pointed at the thumb-sized blinking green dot above the cannon. Next to it was a rectangular bar with a trace of green that was barely visible at the bottom.
“Should be! We should go to bed first, just leave it be.” Hong Qingyi waved indifferently, yawning as she fell onto the bed.
Three days later, all of the ability users gathered in the base with serious faces as the earth shook slightly around them.
“The zombie army is about 3 kilometers away and approaching fast. The final conservative estimates tell us that there are about 3 million zombies outside and with their current speed, they should reach this city in less than 20 minutes.”
Three million….that was three times than the original number. And these were only the conservative estimates….Everyone’s heart was heavy as the lives of a million people in the base hung on their shoulders. This mission was too important to fail…
“Get out of the way.” A cold and hoarse voice suddenly sounded.
“Eldest Young Miss! Young Master!” The men standing guard on top of the walls immediately saluted towards the two newcomers.
“En…” Duan Hongwu hummed in acknowledgment and frowned when he turned to study his friends’ faces. Mu Qingli and Chi Mengyan’s faces were black and blue from fatigue, their faces rough from the cold and their hair scattered around their faces like a crazy person who just escaped from an asylum.
“Can you two still fight in this state?”
“I can.”
“Yes.”
Mu Qingli brushed aside her unruly hair, revealing a pair of anxious eyes. For three days, she had searched high and low, but the two people in question could not be found. The entire base had been searched from top to bottom but there was still no trace of them. Just like in the previous world, the two had simply disappeared into thin air! Just where are they?
The two anxious people had long forgotten that Hong Qingyi’s speed ability had already reached Tier-8, a speed that was comparable to the speed of light. So even if they sent people out to search for them, with Hong Qingyi’s speed, it would be like a gust of wind passed by them and most wouldn’t notice them at all.
And any traces of them had disappeared as well. This is because Gu Anran could store away any of their supplies with just a wave of her hand. So the search was even more fruitless as all evidence of them disappeared.
However, Mu Qingli and the others who haven’t slept for three days were bogged down with exhaustion and anxiety, so their brains were muddled and too confused to realize this. Thus, they could only use the slowest method of combing through every area to find them.
Mu Qingli clenched her fists, her bloodshot gaze boring down into the army of zombies that were getting closer and closer. She almost couldn’t restrain the killing intent in her heart. She wanted to rush into the zombies and slaughter them all, so as to relieve all the heavy emotions in her heart.
Suddenly a white light flashed and a booming sound shook the ground….a huge explosion exploded in the distance. Dust and sand flew everywhere as strong winds fiercely struck the surrounding areas. Everyone could only grasp tightly onto the wall, close their eyes, and cover their faces as they prayed to not be blown away.
“Pahhh…what the hell was that?” A man spat out the dust in his mouth, curling his mouth in distaste as he shouted. However, no one responded to him so he raised his head and looked at some of the people who were standing up. They all seemed to be looking forward to something, just what had happened. So he also stood up and looked in the same direction.
In the distance, a huge pit has appeared. The wind blew chillingly down their backs as they stared at the deep pit, it must have been at least several meters deep as the zombies that once occupied the area has disappeared.
What the hell happened?
This was the question in everyone’s hearts.
Only Mu Qingli and Chi Mengyan who stood to the side and clutched the corners of their clothes with pale faces understood what happened.
“She’s gone….disappeared…she left me again….” Mu Qingli looked at the large pit in the ground with a blank face. And just like the ground, her heart now also had a big empty hole in it….
